In 2017, a stray dog named Scout found himself living at a local animal shelter. Like many shelter dogs, he was waiting for a family to choose him.

But Scout wasn’t the type of dog to just sit and wait for his future to begin.

He had his eyes on a very specific destination right across the street.

One night, Scout decided to take matters into his own paws.

He managed to scale two large, tall fences at the shelter facility.

After making his great escape, he trotted across the street and let himself right into the local nursing home.

He didn’t cause any trouble; he simply found a comfortable couch and went to sleep.

The nursing home’s midnight supervisor was quite surprised to find a stray dog snoozing in the lobby.

They called the pound, and animal control came to bring Scout back to his kennel.

But Scout’s mission was far from over.

Over the course of his first week at the shelter, he broke out and sneaked into the nursing home three different times.

After the third break-in, the nursing home staff started to realize what was happening.

It became clear that Scout wasn’t just wandering aimlessly.

He had chosen this specific building for a reason.

The staff decided that maybe the persistent pup actually wanted to live there with them.

Taking in a stray dog came with a few unknowns for the healthcare facility.

The staff worried about how Scout would react to living with their 20 residents.

At first, the sweet dog was a little timid.

The bustling environment and new faces were a bit overwhelming for him to process.

However, it only took a couple of weeks for Scout to completely settle in.

Soon, it felt like he had always been a part of the nursing home family.

Today, Scout thinks he is the absolute boss of the entire facility.

It has become his daily routine to personally visit each and every one of the 20 residents.

A Gift For Empathy

Scout takes his new job very seriously.

If the doorbell rings, he runs out barking to let everyone know he is in charge.

But his true gift is his deep empathy for the people around him.

If anyone is feeling down, Scout can sense it, and he will quietly sit with them or lay on their beds to offer comfort.

Now, the former stray is spoiled rotten and has loving companions 24 hours a day.

The residents love taking him on walks and throwing balls for him to chase.

He also has a sassy side, barking at the staff in a game they affectionately call “bullying for biscuits.”

Ultimately, Scout makes the nursing home feel like a true home, proving that sometimes, a rescue dog knows exactly where he belongs.
