A Wrong Turn To The Right Place
Sometimes, a simple mistake can be the miracle someone else has been waiting for.
The daughter of the founder of Donald’s Doggy Haven was on her way to a university class when she got mixed up with her directions.
While trying to find her way, she stumbled across a tiny, frail dog who had been left to fend for herself.
Realizing the pup was in desperate need of help, she immediately stopped. “Oh my goodness, I can’t just leave you,” she said, scooping the little dog up.
Stepping Up To Help
The little dog, later named Pinky, was taken in by Donald’s Doggy Haven to begin her recovery.
When a local animal lover saw Pinky’s heartbreaking story online, she knew she had to get involved.
“When I saw the story, I couldn’t help but reach out and decide to foster her,” she explained.
Upon meeting Pinky, the foster mom was shocked by just how skinny and fragile the little dog was.
Surviving The Unthinkable
Pinky’s past remained a mystery, but the toll of her life on the streets was obvious.
Her foster mom marveled at the tiny dog’s resilience. “It’s honestly insane to me how she even survived, like the heat and things of where we’re at and the conditions based off of how she was found.”
A trip to the vet revealed that Pinky was far from a young pup.
The veterinary team estimated that the little survivor was over 10 years old.
Healing The Wounds Of The Past
It was clear that Pinky’s first decade of life had not been easy.
Her foster mom noted that she had definitely had puppies in the past.
On top of her frail frame, Pinky was suffering from severe skin issues when she was first found.
To soothe her irritated skin, her foster mom dedicated the first couple of weeks to giving her frequent medicated baths.
Not Your Average Chihuahua
As her skin healed and she gained weight, Pinky slowly started to get better.
With her physical health improving, her true personality finally began to blossom.
Her foster mom quickly learned that Pinky was incredibly affectionate, wanting to give “all of the kisses in the world.”
Unlike the stereotype of a feisty Chihuahua, Pinky just wanted to be held 24/7. “She is not what you picture when you think of a Chihuahua, if I’m being honest,” her mom noted.
A Sudden Turn In Health
Despite their strong bond, keeping Pinky was actually never part of the original plan.
The goal was simply to foster her until a forever family could be found.
But closer to a month into having her, something frightening happened.
Pinky suddenly started coughing profusely, prompting an immediate rush to the vet. “I’m right here, baby,” her mom comforted her during the scary ordeal.
The Heartbreaking Diagnosis
At the clinic, the veterinary team delivered some difficult news about the senior dog’s health.
They discovered that Pinky had a heart murmur and was suffering from congestive heart failure.
The terrifying diagnosis was a major turning point for her foster mom.
“At that point, without a doubt, I decided she had already found her home with us,” she shared.
Living With A Delicate Heart
Pinky’s condition is something she will have to manage for the rest of her life.
At a recent checkup, the vet confirmed that her enlarged heart has not changed.
“It’s not something that’s ever going to go away,” her mom explained. “It’s just something that she has to live with.”
Her family now carefully monitors her symptoms, hoping and praying she won’t need to be hospitalized again.
The Benjamin Button Dog
Despite her heart condition, Pinky is living her absolute best life today.
She feels great, loves to play with her toys, and even gets the “zoomies” around the house.
Her transformation has been so dramatic that a rescue partner from Donald’s Doggy Haven constantly jokes about her appearance.
They call her “Benjamin Button,” because from the time she was rescued, it seems like she is actually aging backwards thanks to the incredible love and care she finally received.
