For Koda’s birthday, the joyful dog and his mom, Natalie, went out for a beautiful hike. He was his usual goofy, happy self, bounding through the snow and leaping over logs without a care in the world.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with him that day. But the very next morning, a terrifying reality set in.

When Koda woke up, all four of his legs had completely stopped working. The sudden and unexplained paralysis left Natalie terrified as she looked at her dog’s confused face.

Natalie immediately rushed Koda to the veterinary hospital. Medical staff quickly ran tests to figure out what had stolen the young dog’s mobility overnight.

An MRI confirmed her worst fears: Koda had suffered a spinal stroke.

The initial prognosis was heartbreaking. Doctors warned Natalie that her beloved dog was never going to walk again.

As if the paralysis wasn’t enough, Koda’s situation suddenly grew even more dire. While at the clinic, he contracted a hospital-acquired infection.

The dangerous infection quickly spread to his blood and his heart. What started as a mobility crisis turned into a battle for his very survival.

For three agonizing weeks, Koda fought just to stay alive.

Natalie bargained with the universe during those dark days. She decided she would gladly accept a wheelchair for life if he could just make it through the illness.

During those three weeks, Natalie visited her dog in the hospital every single day. She refused to let him fight alone.

Determined to help him heal, she tried everything she could think of to stimulate his paralyzed limbs. She would gently tickle his feet, hoping for any kind of reaction.

She even brought an electric toothbrush to the hospital, using its vibrations to try and wake up his dormant nerves.

Through it all, Koda would still manage to smile. Even in his most vulnerable state, he was showing flashes of his true self.

The Demands Of Coming Home

When Koda finally beat the infection and came home, his care requirements were monumental. Because of the heart infection, he needed a daily injection for two straight months.

His paralysis meant he couldn’t shift his own weight. To prevent painful bed sores, Natalie set alarms throughout the night so she could flip him over every four hours.

He was also double incontinent, requiring Natalie to learn how to manually express his bladder.

It was an exhausting, round-the-clock routine. But Natalie never complained, focusing only on keeping her best friend comfortable.

Choosing Koda Above All

Natalie started Koda in physical therapy, hoping to defy the odds. The rehab therapist was cautious, not wanting to give her false hope about his chances of walking again.

But deep down, Natalie felt it wasn’t the end of their story. She dedicated herself entirely to his recovery, making heavy sacrifices in her friendships and social life.

“I chose him,” she explained, noting that if the roles were reversed, Koda would be there for her.

She knew she would do anything to give him a second chance at a normal life.

The first few weeks at home were incredibly hard on both of them. Yet, Koda’s determination and resilience shone through the darkness.

He seemed to accept their new reality with grace. Instead of giving up, he focused on what he could still do.

His unwavering spirit taught Natalie profound lessons about life, loyalty, and patience.

They were in this fight together, every step of the way. Natalie felt incredibly lucky just to be his mom.

Slowly but surely, Koda’s hard work began to pay off. Against all odds, the paralyzed dog started to regain his mobility.

Today, Koda can actually walk again. While he can’t go on long walks just yet, he is making incredible progress with every passing week.

He has a very specific goal in mind for his daily exercise.

His best friend lives three houses down, and walking over to see them is his favorite motivation.

Koda’s health has stabilized beautifully. His heart infection completely cleared up, leaving no residual effects behind.

He is now living a full, incredibly happy life with the mom who refused to give up on him. The bond they share is stronger than ever.

Through his miraculous recovery, Koda taught Natalie what true love and friendship really look like.

“I tell him every day that he’s perfect just the way he is,” Natalie shared. Looking back on the difficult journey, she knows she would go through it all over again for him.
