Donna from Stray Rescue of St. Louis pulled up to an abandoned house to investigate a call.
As she approached the property, she looked toward the ground and saw a heartbreaking sight.

The poor dog was trapped inside the empty, forgotten building, looking out at a world he couldn’t reach.
Earning His Trust
Donna approached the window carefully, speaking in a gentle, reassuring voice.
“Hey! What are you doing?” she asked the stranded pup, letting him know she was a friend.
She offered him some food to win him over and ease his anxiety.
The dog was hungry and eager for connection, but he was stuck deep down in the basement.
A Heavy Dilemma
Getting him out wasn’t going to be as simple as just opening a door.
The house was abandoned, and the drop into the basement was significant.

They spotted an old table, a discarded mattress, and a heavy wooden door.
Building the Perfect Ramp
With a burst of creativity, the team went to work building a makeshift ramp.
First, they propped the mattress up on the table to gain some much-needed height.
Then, they laid the old wooden door over the mattress to give the structure solid stability.
It was an ingenious, makeshift staircase leading right to the window of freedom.
The Great Escape

“OK. You got it! Up, up, up! C’mon,” she encouraged him gently.
As soon as the dog put his front paws on the wooden door, the team carefully pulled him forward.

Today, Oscar Mayer has left his difficult past far behind him and has officially been adopted.
He is living his absolute best life in a loving forever home.
His rescuers note that he is doing fantastic, fully embracing his new, well-deserved role as a pampered couch potato.
