Virginia Woman Knew This Dog Came With Serious Quirks, But One Detail Made Her Fly Across The Country
This misunderstood dog bounced across multiple states with a ‘difficult’ label until one Virginia woman decided to fly across the country to give him the patient, loving home he always deserved.
A Cross-Country Journey of Rejection
Some dogs just need a second chance, but one misunderstood pup needed far more than that. He needed someone willing to look past a troubled history and see the sweet soul hiding underneath.
His journey was a turbulent one, marked by sudden changes and a label that made him nearly impossible to adopt.
It took a cross-country road trip and a lot of patience, but he finally found the person who was meant to understand his quirks.
His turbulent story began in Texas. His first owner made the difficult decision to surrender him because she was having a baby.
Suddenly without a family, he was moved to a foster home in Florida, where he stayed for about a month.
Still searching for a permanent place to land, the confused dog was then relocated all the way to Seattle. His world was constantly shifting, and the instability was taking a toll on him.
The Incident That Changed Everything
Unfortunately, the stress of constant relocation began to manifest as behavioral issues. During his time in the Pacific Northwest, a frightening incident occurred.
Someone tried to get something out of his mouth, and the fearful dog snapped at them. In the rescue world, a bite history is a heavy burden.
It is incredibly hard to rehome a dog who has ever snapped at somebody. Because of this incident, he was sent to a training facility in California.
There, a wonderful woman named Diana spent several months working diligently to train him and help him overcome his fears.
A Long-Distance Leap of Faith
While the dog was working hard in California, a woman living in Northern Virginia was closely following his story online.
She knew his behavioral history would make it really difficult for the rescue to find a suitable place for him. Despite the challenges, she felt an undeniable connection.
“Something in my brain just said, ‘I need to save this dog,'” she recalled. She applied to adopt him and was thrilled when she was finally approved.
The Five-Day Road Trip Home
Determined to bring him home safely, the dedicated adopter flew out to Los Angeles. She knew a cross-country flight might be too stressful for him.
Instead, she rented a car and drove him all the way from Los Angeles back to Northern Virginia. The epic road trip took about five days.
When they finally arrived home, she and her husband knew they had to take things really slow. They wanted to give him the time and space he needed to decompress.
An Explosion of Glitter and Happiness
Their patience quickly paid off. Stripped of the stress of constant moving, the dog revealed his true personality.
He proved to be the most loving and sweet companion. One simple moment perfectly captured his joyous spirit.
The first time his new mom threw him a tennis ball, his reaction was purely magical. “He just exploded into like glitter and happiness,” she shared.
He was so incredibly excited by the simple toy. Now, he proudly walks with his tennis ball everywhere he goes.
The Three-Thousand-Dollar Pedicures
Along with his big personality, the dog came with some unique physical quirks. He has funny little paws because his toe bones are not attached inside.
As a result, his nails grow at crazy angles, and he is extremely sensitive about them. He will not let anybody touch his paws while he is awake.
To keep him healthy, they take him to the vet about once a month for a nail trim. He has to be fully sedated for the procedure.
“That’s about $3,000 a year on nail trims for my dog,” his mom joked. “I haven’t had a pedicure in two years, but that’s okay because I love him even though he spends all of my money.”
Navigating the Hidden Scars
Despite his happy new life, he still carries some unseen scars from his past. He is a lot more work than a typical dog.
If someone throws a toy over his head, he flinches. His family doesn’t know what happened in his past to make him so fearful of things raised above him.
When they are out walking, they have to be careful. If children ask to pet him, his mom politely declines, redirecting them to one of her other two dogs, which includes a completely blind rescue.
He gets along quite well with his canine siblings, finding comfort in their presence.
Learning to Let Go
Since bringing him home at the beginning of May, his family has remained vigilant. He hasn’t had any snapping incidents in a really long time, but they still muzzle him at the vet just to be safe.
He also struggles with separation anxiety, a lingering effect of losing so many homes in his early life.
To help him cope, they are working with a local animal behaviorist. He is also on medication, which his mom says has helped immensely.
They are slowly working up to the point where she can be in a different room without him feeling the need to be right by her side.
A Gentle Wake-Up Call
His deep attachment means he always wants to be in his mom’s lap. He loves to sleep on her, but it comes with a catch.
Because of his past trauma, he is absolutely terrified if he is woken up suddenly. For his own safety and comfort, he isn’t allowed to fall asleep on top of her.
If he does doze off, she has to gently try and coax him off so he doesn’t wake up in a panic. It’s a delicate dance of love and understanding.
A Good Dog Finally Home
Through all the vet visits, the careful walks, and the behavioral training, his mom wouldn’t trade him for the world.
“I definitely belong to him at this point,” she admitted with a smile.
He is a truly good dog who wants nothing more than to be a good boy for his family. By simply working around his quirks, they have given him the beautiful, permanent life he spent so long searching for.
