When Stevie first arrived in North Carolina, he was a lovable ‘hot mess’ who bumped into walls. But with a little patience and a lot of love, this sweet dog figured out exactly how to navigate his new life.

When Stevie first arrived in his new environment in North Carolina, everything was a challenge.

The sweet dog spent a lot of time bumping into walls as he tried to figure out his path.

His caretaker affectionately called him a “hot mess” as he stumbled around the unfamiliar space.

But beneath that initial confusion was a brilliant mind waiting to blossom.

Missing Out On Comfort

It was heartbreakingly clear that Stevie hadn’t experienced much luxury in his past.

His rescuer suspected he had probably never even had a proper dog bed before.

Everything soft and cozy was a completely new sensation for him.

He had to learn what it meant to simply relax in a safe home.

Creating Beautiful Artwork

He soon discovered the joy of soft blankets, though his way of enjoying them was a bit unique.

If a blanket was left on the floor, Stevie would pounce on it and joyfully rip it to shreds.

His caretaker jokingly called the shredded fabric Stevie’s “beautiful artwork.”

Instead of stopping him, she purposely leaves a designated, already-torn blanket on the floor just so he can keep having fun.

The Secret Toy Hoarder

As his confidence grew, so did his quirky personality.

Stevie absolutely loves his toys, but he prefers to keep them safely tucked away.

He started hiding his favorite playthings under the bed and beneath the dresser.

He even started hiding his own food dish alongside his toy collection!

Flipping The System

His appetite underwent a massive transformation as he settled in.

He went from barely eating at all to wanting to devour everything in sight.

To help him pace himself, his caretaker bought him a special slow-feeder bowl.

But Stevie is so smart that he quickly learned to just pick the bowl up and flip it over to get all the food at once.

Mapping Out The House

As Stevie’s other senses sharpened, his ability to get around improved dramatically.

Soon, he could make his way around the house like there was no problem at all.

He memorized his routes, easily finding his way right through the garage.

He even learned how to independently navigate up the three steps into the kitchen.

Waiting For Treats

He also memorized the layout of the home’s most important locations.

Stevie learned exactly where the pantry was located.

Now, he knows to go stand right by the pantry door where the dog treats are kept.

He patiently waits there, knowing his human will eventually hand over a delicious snack.

A Sidewalk Pro

His intelligence shines just as brightly outside the house.

When his caretaker takes him for a walk, Stevie knows exactly how to navigate the neighborhood.

If he veers off into the grass, he immediately senses the change and moves right back onto the sidewalk.

He even knows exactly where his favorite tree is, stops to pee, and safely returns to the pavement.

Owning The House

Stevie is a “really smart cookie” who eventually figured out exactly where the living room couch was so he could hop up and relax.

According to his caretaker, he now completely owns the house.

Despite his rough start, he is happiest when he is snuggled up close with his humans.

“He’s a really sweet boy,” his caretaker shared. “I absolutely adore him.”
