Ohio Dog Never Used To Do This For His Older Brother, Then Something Changed Six Months Ago

A 14-year-old Ohio senior dog requires extra care and a nightly lift up the stairs, but it’s his younger brother’s sweet daily gesture that shows the true depth of their bond.

In a quiet home, two senior dogs share a bond that has only grown stronger with age.

Bean is a gentle 14-year-old dog who has seen his fair share of life’s ups and downs.

His faithful companion and younger brother, Bane, is 12 years old and rarely leaves his side.

Together, they have developed a touching morning routine that shows just how deeply dogs can care for one another.

A Devoted Brother

Every single morning when Bean is lying down, Bane approaches him with a specific mission.

He gently leans over his older brother and begins to lick his face.

For about five minutes straight, Bane carefully cleans the “crusties” out of Bean’s eyes.

It is a tender, deliberate act of caretaking that touches their family’s hearts every day.

Always Close By

Their mom, Sarah, has had the privilege of witnessing this close bond constantly.

She has been lucky enough to work from home for the past two years.

Behind her work setup, she placed two cozy dog beds for the brothers.

Bean and Bane will happily lay there the entire time she is working, perfectly content just to be near her.

A Sudden Setback

As Bean has gotten older, his body has required a little extra help.

Last August or September, Bean suffered a painful setback when he tore the CCL in his back leg.

Because of the injury, he can no longer manage the stairs on his own.

Attempting to climb them would only risk further injury to his fragile leg.

A Nightly Lift of Love

The family’s bedrooms are all located upstairs, and Bean has always loved sleeping in his parents’ bed.

Rather than making him sleep alone downstairs, the family made a beautiful adjustment.

Every single night, Sarah’s husband gently picks Bean up and carries him up the stairs to their bed.

In the morning, he carefully carries the senior dog back down to start his day.

Bean is a very clingy dog who simply wants to be surrounded by the people he loves.

That love extends deeply to Sarah’s six-year-old son, Dominic.

The two of them are best friends, frequently found cuddling together on the couch.

Dominic is always eager to give his senior buddy “one more kiss” to show his affection.

Sensing the Changes

Sarah noted that Bane never used to clean his brother’s eyes every morning.

This sweet grooming behavior only started within the past six months.

She believes Bane can sense that his older brother is aging and experiencing health changes.

It is his way of comforting a companion who isn’t feeling completely well.

Managing Health Hurdles

Bean’s health journey has been complex, starting six years ago when he was diagnosed with Addison’s disease.

His body stopped producing cortisol on its own, requiring a daily low dose of prednisone and a monthly shot to keep his electrolytes balanced.

In addition to his CCL injury, he also suffered a scary mini-stroke last July.

Thankfully, with dedicated veterinary care and his family’s vigilance, his conditions are well managed.

Caring for a senior dog comes with many unexpected hurdles, but Sarah knows it is entirely worth it.

She believes it is incredibly important to be there for them in their golden years and never abandon them.

Despite his challenges, Bean has been doing really well.

Whenever Sarah is having a bad day, Bean simply gives her a look with his soulful eyes, completely melting her heart and making everything better.
