Texas Woman Had Never Planned To Bring Home A Dog That Day, Until One Shelter Photo Stopped Her
When a tiny blind dog with a neurological quirk was surrendered to the Texas Humane Society, one woman knew she had to bring her home immediately.
A Heartbreaking Surrender
Emma wasn’t like other dogs waiting for a home in the shelter.
The tiny dog had completely lost her sight, leaving her in a dark and unfamiliar world.
Sadly, the people who previously owned her had surrendered her because they simply couldn’t take care of her with all of her medical needs.
On top of being blind, Emma had a neurological condition that caused her to constantly spin to the left, making her need for a patient, loving family even more urgent.
Love At First Sight
Tori happened to be scrolling online when she saw Emma’s photo on the local Humane Society’s page.
She felt an immediate connection to the special-needs pup.
She quickly sent the post to her husband, feeling a strong pull to help the little dog.
“I really love her,” Tori realized, knowing that this tiny dog deserved a comfortable place to land.
Waiting In The Parking Lot
Adopting a special-needs dog wasn’t something Tori had planned to do that day.
“I don’t ever do anything spontaneous like that,” she admitted.
But she drove right to the Humane Society, arriving before the building was even open.
She sat in her car in the parking lot for 30 minutes, anxiously waiting for the doors to unlock so she could meet Emma.
No Time To Waste
When the staff finally brought the little dog out to meet her, Tori’s mind was made up instantly.
“I’m going to take her home,” she decided right then and there.
She hadn’t prepared anything for a new pet—she didn’t even have a dog bed waiting at the house.
Despite the lack of supplies, Tori just knew deep down that Emma needed to come home with her that very day.
The Ultimate After-School Surprise
With Emma safely in the car, Tori headed to pick up her daughters from school.
She completely surprised the girls with the sweet, tiny dog.
Tori admitted she didn’t know anything about bringing a blind dog home, and she wasn’t sure how Emma would adjust.
But to her amazement, the little dog was immediately confident in her new surroundings.
Mapping Like A Roomba
Emma had a brilliant way of learning the layout of her new house.
“I describe her like a Roomba,” Tori explained. “She maps the house.”
On her very first day, the blind pup successfully navigated her way to find her food and water bowls.
The whole family was incredibly proud and amazed at how well she could do it all on her own.
Happy Little Spins
While Emma can walk in a straight line, her neurological condition shows up most when she’s happy.
The more excited she gets, the faster and faster she spins to the left.
She is also incredibly tiny, a detail that Tori notes is hard to capture in pictures and videos.
When Tori walks into a room, Emma uses her other senses to find her, scanning the area by smell and sound.
The Special Dragon Toy
Because she is blind, Emma does have a few boundaries in the home.
She has never tried to climb the stairs, preferring to wait patiently at the bottom for her family to come down and say hi.
She also doesn’t play very often, but she did claim one specific item for herself.
She took a liking to one of Tori’s daughter’s toys—a little dragon—which has become her main toy.
The Star Of The School
Today, Emma is a calm and sweet presence in the home, and Tori’s daughters absolutely adore her.
The girls are incredibly proud to show her off to their friends and teachers.
She has become a bit of a local celebrity, with kids at school saying, “Oh, I’ve heard about her.”
In fact, whenever the girls have a schoolwork assignment that requires them to write a story, it is always about the tiny, spinning blind dog who changed their lives.
