California Dog Was One Hour From Euthanasia When Her Rescuer Heard Three Words
A sweet, one-year-old dog was out of time at a California shelter, but a frantic phone call and a long drive gave her the second chance she desperately needed.
A Frantic Phone Call
The reality of a crowded animal shelter can be heartbreaking. For many dogs, their time runs out before they ever get the chance to show a family how much love they have to give.
But sometimes, a single moment of compassion can rewrite a dog’s entire story.
When one woman saw a sweet dog on a shelter’s euthanasia list, she knew she couldn’t just scroll past. She immediately picked up the phone to call her boyfriend, setting a life-saving rescue into motion.
“I immediately called my boyfriend and I was like, something terrible just happened,” the woman recalled. She explained the dire situation, and without hesitation, her boyfriend simply told her, “Go get her.”
Racing Against the Clock
The dog was already on her extended day at the shelter. Nobody had stepped up to claim her, and her time was officially up.
Knowing the stakes, the woman quickly got in her car to make the hour-and-a-half drive to the shelter.
During the long drive, she was filled with anxiety. She wasn’t even sure if the dog would still be there when she arrived.
Fortunately, she pulled into the shelter parking lot right as the doors opened. The dog was scheduled to be euthanized by noon that very day, meaning she was saved with just an hour to spare.
Stopping for Reassurance
“Oh my goodness, you’re free, mamas,” her rescuer told her as they finally left the building together.
The car ride home was the beginning of a beautiful bond. Because the woman was the one who walked her out of the shelter, the scared dog quickly realized she was safe.
When they went for their first walk to give the dog some outside time, the pup’s affectionate nature immediately shined through.
She would stop walking every 10 steps just to ask for a hug. She wanted her new foster mom to get down on her level and give her reassurance, happily sitting in her lap to soak in the love.
Freezing in Fear
Despite the sweet moments outside, the first few days in a new home were incredibly rough. The dog was still very skittish and unsure of her new surroundings.

To make matters slightly more complicated, the new rescue smelled terrible from her time at the shelter.
However, because she had just been spayed, her rescuers were strictly instructed not to bathe her for 10 long days.
They didn’t let the smell stop them from showering her with affection. “We were loving on her anyway, and everything was just so stinky,” her rescuer laughed.

Meeting the Pack
Integrating the new dog into the household required patience, especially since the woman already had two dogs of her own.
They took things slowly, setting up baby gates to keep the dogs separated at first.
This allowed the dogs to safely see and smell each other without feeling overwhelmed by a sudden introduction.
With time and careful management, the new rescue slowly started to realize she was part of a pack and began to come out of her shell.
Soft Beds and Tennis Balls
As the days passed, the dog finally began to relax. She realized that she was in a safe place where she didn’t have to be afraid anymore.
She thoroughly enjoyed having a soft, warm bed to lay on, a stark contrast to the cold shelter floor she had left behind.
Soon, her true personality emerged. She proved to be a very silly, playful dog with plenty of energy to burn.
She even learned how to play fetch with a tennis ball, an activity she absolutely loved sharing with her new family.
The Puppy She Deserved to Be
The woman believes a big reason the dog, named Ruby, was overlooked was simply because she is a pit bull mix.
“People just avoid those in the shelters, but she’s very affectionate,” her rescuer explained.
It broke her heart to think that this sweet, one-year-old dog’s life almost went to waste when she had so much love to give.
