New York Dog Rescued From Hoarding Won’t Come Out, Then His Foster Mom Discovers Exactly What He Cannot Resist
Tiki the rescue dog was so traumatized by his past that he refused to eat or leave his hiding spot. But a dedicated foster mom refused to give up on him.
A Heartbreaking Start

When Tiki was first rescued, the terrified dog had completely shut down.
The trauma of his past had left him frozen, unable to trust the new world around him.
He refused to eat, drink, or even go to the bathroom.
He simply didn’t want anyone to touch him, and it seemed as though he had lost his will to live.
Tiki had been pulled out of a severe hoarding situation, leaving him entirely unequipped for normal life.
A Safe Place To Land

Knowing that a shelter environment would be too overwhelming for the frightened pup, a rescue organization quickly stepped in.
They knew Tiki needed a quiet, patient environment if he was ever going to heal.
That’s when Isabel Klee agreed to take him in as a foster.
Her goal was simple: help Tiki overcome his intense fear of humans and begin his healing journey.
Hiding In The Shadows

The first few days in his new foster home were incredibly stressful for everyone involved.
Isabel desperately wanted to make sure that Tiki felt safe, but the dog remained entirely withdrawn.
He spent his time hiding under the bed, refusing to engage with his surroundings.
He still wasn’t eating or drinking anything, leaving his foster mom worried about his health.
The First Bite

Isabel continued to offer him food and space, hoping that patience would eventually win out.
Then, a tiny miracle happened.
For the first time since arriving, Isabel caught Tiki eating his dinner.
“I just knew he was going to be okay,” she recalled. “I was like, okay, he feels safe enough to come out from under the bed.”
A Trail Of Cheese

With Tiki finally willing to eat, Isabel discovered his ultimate weakness: cheese.
She realized that this high-value treat could be the key to unlocking his confidence.
She began leaving a little trail of cheese to encourage him to explore different places in the house.
Piece by piece, the cheese coaxed him out of the bedroom, into the living area, and eventually out the door onto the patio.
Learning To Be A Dog

As Tiki grew bolder, he started displaying behaviors that most pet owners take for granted.
He began jumping up on the bed and actually going for walks outside.
“All of these things are, for most dogs, table stakes,” Isabel explained.
But for a dog who had once given up on life, watching Tiki do these normal things felt like a monumental victory.
Choosing To Be Brave

The most beautiful transformation was watching Tiki learn how to accept affection.
The fact that he could now ask for love, want it, and receive it blew Isabel’s mind every single time.
She often found herself marveling at his resilience, proud of how brave he chose to be every single day.
His journey from a shut-down hoarding survivor to a loving companion was nothing short of inspiring.
Finding His Forever Person

It didn’t take long for Isabel to realize that she couldn’t let Tiki go.
She filled out an application to officially adopt him, cementing their incredible bond.
Today, Tiki is glued to her side, following her everywhere and constantly staring up at her with pure adoration.
“Tiki has claimed me as his person,” Isabel joked, noting that everyone else is just a “spare human” to the brave little dog who finally found his home.
