New York Dog Looked So Different From Her Littermates That Even Her Vet Had Never Seen One Like Her

Born looking completely different from her German Shepherd littermates, a special New York pup named Nina had to overcome hurricanes and health hurdles to find her forever family.

A Unique Little Pup

When a litter of puppies is born, you usually expect them to share a strong family resemblance. For one special pup named Nina, nature had a completely different plan in mind.

While all the other dogs in her litter looked like classic German Shepherds, Nina stood out from the very beginning. She had very little hair, tiny beady eyes, and a big, unmistakable smile.

Because her teeth were so prominent, some people were initially scared by her appearance. But her rescuers knew that her different look was exactly what made her so incredibly special.

A Fateful Scroll

Nina’s journey to a forever home began with a simple scroll on social media. Her future adopter was following an Instagram account called Cheers for Chupey.

It was through that page that she first laid eyes on the unusual little dog. She immediately fell in love with Nina’s distinctive face and bright spirit.

She quickly filled out an application to bring the special pup home. As luck would have it, she was the very first applicant, securing her place as Nina’s new mom.

Born On The Streets

Before she could enjoy the comforts of a home, Nina had a rough start to life. She was born as a stray on the streets of Puerto Rico.

Thankfully, she was safely captured by friends of the rescue organization. They made sure she was taken off the streets and given a chance at a better life.

But finding a family was only the first step. Getting the little dog safely to the mainland United States would prove to be a massive challenge.

A Difficult Journey North

Coordinating Nina’s travel was filled with unexpected roadblocks. A hurricane swept through the area, complicating the rescue efforts and delaying her flight.

On top of the severe weather, the little dog was denied a health certificate a couple of times. Her adopter had to wait patiently while the rescue worked through the red tape.

Finally, the day arrived for them to meet in New York City. When her new mom saw her in person for the first time, she was overjoyed, exclaiming, “Oh my gosh, you’re real!”

A Wardrobe For Protection

Nina’s unique physical traits meant she needed specialized care. Even her new veterinarian in New York had never seen a dog quite like her before.

Because she had so little hair, her skin was highly exposed to the elements. The vet knew for sure that she would need sunscreen to protect her delicate skin.

To keep her safe during outdoor adventures, Nina now has to wear special clothes. Her custom wardrobe ensures she can enjoy the sunshine without getting burned.

A Cautious Arrival

Despite finally being in a safe home, Nina was understandably overwhelmed. The transition from a stray in Puerto Rico to a house pet in New York was a lot to process.

Meeting The Pack

With Nina feeling more confident, it was time to introduce her to her furry siblings. They brought in their other dog, Oreo, to let the pups sniff each other.

Despite being the smallest dog in the house, Nina quickly proved she had the biggest personality. She confidently made her rounds to each dog in the home.

She would let out a special bark, trying to get the entire pack howling together. She wasn’t afraid to assert herself, making it clear that she was the new boss of the house.

A Scientific Mystery

While she can be bossy, Nina is also incredibly affectionate with the people she loves. She even charms the other dogs into giving her gentle kisses.

Today, she gets annual blood work and appears to be perfectly healthy. Her unique genetics have even caught the attention of Cornell University, who is conducting a study on dogs with her specific appearance.

Her family hopes to learn more about her genetic makeup this month. Until then, Nina continues to thrive, teaching everyone she meets that true beauty always shines from the inside out.
