When a 13-year-old Great Pyrenees named Cloud found himself in an unfamiliar shelter, the world seemed far too overwhelming.

Found wandering along a busy road in Atlanta, the senior dog was brought to safety by animal control. But the transition took a heavy toll on his gentle spirit.

He was completely reserved, exceptionally quiet, and showed no desire to interact with anyone around him.

Giving Up Hope

The shelter environment can be incredibly stressful for any dog, but for a senior like Cloud, it was paralyzing. Staff members noted that there were days he refused to even go outside.

He had no interest in visiting the play yards or socializing with others.

When one animal advocate made an unexpected visit to the shelter, they saw Cloud lying on the floor with his head held low. He looked like a dog who had simply given up all hope.

A Promise To Help

Seeing the defeated senior dog struck a deep chord with the visitor. The sight of him so withdrawn and numb was heartbreaking.

They knew immediately that they had to step in and help him find a loving home.

The initial plan was to foster Cloud, get him out of the loud shelter environment, and be incredibly resilient about finding the perfect person to adopt him.

Leaving the shelter was the first step, but Cloud wasn’t ready to let his guard down just yet.

When they first arrived at the house, the 70-pound dog just stood there, frozen in fear.

He seemed deeply unsure of his new surroundings, wondering what was going to happen next. His rescuer wondered if there was a chance this old soul could ever learn to trust humans again.

The Five-Minute Breakthrough

Sensing the dog’s intense anxiety, his foster decided to try a gentle, calming technique.

They sat down with Cloud and began practicing dog somatics, gently rubbing him with soothing chest circles.

The response was almost immediate. Within just five minutes of this comforting touch, Cloud finally let out a breath and relaxed.

Small Steps Forward

That small moment of connection changed the entire trajectory of Cloud’s day.

Later that very same afternoon, the senior dog felt comfortable enough to eat his first full meal in his new environment.

From that day on, Cloud just kept progressing. He began circling the coffee table, tentatively asking for permission to come up and be close to his new friend.

A Failed Foster Plan

The original plan to find Cloud the perfect adopter quickly fell apart, but for the best possible reason.

The senior dog began making incredible eye contact with his foster, constantly wanting to be right by their side.

Realizing the deep bond they had already formed, the rescuer had a change of heart. “This is my boy,” they realized.

In less than 48 hours after bringing him home, Cloud was officially adopted.

Today, the once-shut-down dog has broken nearly every stereotype associated with the independent Great Pyrenees breed.

His new owner affectionately calls him a “stage five clinger” because he follows them absolutely everywhere they go.

Despite weighing 70 pounds, Cloud is convinced he is a lap dog. He loves nothing more than to be held like a little Chihuahua, resting happily right on his owner’s chest.

Learning To Play Again

The transformation from a numb, emotionless shelter dog to a joyful companion has been nothing short of miraculous.

Cloud now gets bursts of energy, doing little hops and prances when he enters “play mode.”

In such a short time frame, this 13-year-old dog allowed himself to open up and trust humans one more time.

His owner hopes that Cloud’s beautiful second chapter will inspire others to take a chance and adopt senior dogs from their local shelters.
