Kansas Traveler Thought Saving A Sick Street Dog In Mexico Would Be Simple Until She Faced One Major Obstacle
A chance encounter with a trusting, sick street dog turns into a massive international rescue mission to bring him home to Kansas.
An Instant Connection
Sometimes, a single glance is all it takes to change two lives forever.
When a traveler met a stray dog on the street, there was an immediate, undeniable bond. The dog, despite his rough condition, looked at her with pure trust.
“We clicked immediately, and he just was so trusting,” his rescuer recalled. “It’s almost like he knew that I wanted to help him and be there for him.”
From that very first moment, she began racking her brain, trying to figure out how to make a rescue work.
Unexpected Challenges
At first glance, the dog was clearly exhausted.
It soon became apparent that his fatigue was due to a severe underlying illness. The reality of his poor health made his quiet, tired demeanor make a lot of sense.
Initially, his rescuer thought the process would be simple. She hoped he just needed some basic vaccines and paperwork to hop on her flight later that day.
Unfortunately, saving a sick street dog in a foreign country is rarely that easy.
Healing Baths and Hard Choices
Naming the sweet pup Camilo, his rescuer got straight to work on his recovery.
She began treating his skin, carefully giving him baths with medicated soap to soothe his ailments. Slowly but surely, Camilo started to feel a little bit better.
Despite the mounting logistical challenges of getting him home, giving up was never an option.
“The last thing that I would ever and could ever do would be like, ‘Oh, well, this is too hard. Let me put him back on the street,'” she explained.
The Border Crossing Plan
As Camilo’s health improved, a major roadblock appeared.
His rescuer discovered that she would not be able to fly with him internationally as originally planned. She had to come up with a backup plan, and fast.
Her second option was a logistical puzzle: fly as close to the United States border as possible, and then physically bring him across the border by land.
It was a daunting task, but she was determined to get Camilo to his new life.
A Brave Flight to Juarez
The journey began with a trip to the airport, where Camilo had to wait in his travel kennel.
He wasn’t the biggest fan of the crate, but his rescuer made sure he was comfortable, tucking a soft blanket and his little Squishmallow toy inside with him.
They boarded their domestic flight and successfully landed in Juarez, Mexico, right near the border.
Camilo was a brave traveler, doing amazingly well during the flight as they waited for a friend to arrive and help them cross.
Stepping Foot in New Mexico
After a tense wait and a border crossing, the moment of triumph finally arrived.
“We made it!” his rescuer cheered as they officially crossed over into the United States. They had safely arrived in New Mexico.
She looked down at the sweet dog who had endured so much to get here.
“Say hi, Camilo,” she told him gently. “Welcome to your new country.”
The Final Stretch to Kansas
The journey wasn’t quite over yet, but the hardest part was behind them.
Meeting up with a friend who had a truck and a trailer, the group loaded up for the final leg of their massive road trip.
They hopped into the truck and set their sights on their ultimate destination: Kansas.
After miles of driving and a good night’s rest, they finally pulled up to the house that would become Camilo’s true home.
Learning to be a Dog
Walking through the front doors, Camilo was officially welcomed to America.
Since arriving in his new home, his personality has completely blossomed. The dog who once didn’t even know how to play with a single toy now proudly digs through his very own bucket of toys to find his favorites.
He has learned how to be playful, how to trust, and most importantly, how to just be a dog.
For the rescuer who refused to leave a sick stray behind, seeing Camilo finally enjoy a carefree, happy life is the greatest reward she could have ever asked for.
