California Dog Was Returned To Her Noisy Kennel, But One Detail On Her Paperwork Made A Woman Look Twice

California shelter staff claimed Cleo was aggressive and had already been returned once. But Maria and her partner decided to give the sweet dog one more chance.

A Heartbreaking Label

Maria was visiting the Lancaster Shelter in Los Angeles, California, when she locked eyes with a special dog named Cleo.

The sweet pup was waiting patiently behind the kennel doors, hoping for a second chance at life.

But her paperwork told a very different story than the gentle eyes looking back at Maria.

Staff at the shelter were hesitant when Maria showed interest in the beautiful dog. They gave her a stern warning about Cleo’s behavior.

“I don’t think you should get that dog because she’s aggressive,” they told Maria. To make matters worse, Cleo had already experienced the heartbreak of a failed adoption.

Someone had previously taken her home, only to return her to the noisy shelter environment.

Taking A Chance

Despite the warnings, Maria and her partner felt a pull toward the misunderstood pup.

They asked the staff if they could take Cleo out to the play yard to see her personality for themselves.

The dog that stepped into the yard was nothing like the aggressive animal described on her paperwork.

“She’s just like a puppy here,” Maria recalled.

Cleo was running around, exuding happiness and showing off her adorable, playful spirit. They knew right then that they had to give her a chance.

A Surprising Transition

The couple officially adopted Cleo and broke her out of the shelter.

As soon as they brought her home, the dog’s true nature shone through brightly.

“Since she got home, it felt like she was our dog forever,” Maria shared.

When friends came over to visit, Cleo greeted them with pure joy and a super calm demeanor.

Maria couldn’t help but wonder why the shelter had ever labeled her as aggressive.

The Camera Reveals The Truth

Many newly adopted rescue dogs struggle with separation anxiety, so Maria kept a close eye on Cleo.

When the couple had to leave the house, they would check their indoor pet camera to see how she was coping.

The footage was incredibly reassuring for the new pet parents.

Cleo would simply curl up and sleep the entire time they were gone.

She never broke anything in the house or chewed on the furniture.

A Calm And Gentle Soul

Having owned dogs before, Maria was amazed by Cleo’s perfect house manners.

“I had dogs before and they were never as calm as her,” she noted.

Her soft, gentle personality made her an absolute joy to have around the home.

The couple quickly decided they wanted to include Cleo in every part of their lives.

They started taking their new best friend everywhere they went.

Overcoming Fears With Dad

While Cleo was perfectly calm indoors, the outside world could still be a little intimidating.

She would sometimes get anxious when leaving the safety of her new house.

She also developed a specific fear of riding on escalators during their outings.

Thankfully, her new dad was more than happy to step in and help her navigate the scary obstacles.

He would gently pick her up and carry her safely up the moving stairs.

Spoiled With Love

Cleo’s dad treats her like an absolute baby, making sure she always feels secure.

Whenever she gets spooked or overwhelmed, he is right there to comfort her.

He spoils her endlessly, proving that she is finally in a home where her feelings matter.

The dog who was once labeled aggressive is now a pampered princess who gets carried when she’s tired or scared.

It is a beautiful contrast to her lonely days in the shelter system.

Everything To Someone

The rescue wasn’t just about saving Cleo; it was about saving Maria, too.

“Since I found her, I was going through some things and she made me happier,” Maria confessed.

Cleo doesn’t even realize how important she has become to her new family.

Amazingly, the shelter had waived Cleo’s adoption fee, giving her away for free.

As Maria perfectly summed it up: “For someone she was nothing, and for us she’s everything.”
