Some dogs have a rough start in life, and their origins remain a mystery. For a sweet dog named Coco, her journey began south of the border.

Megan, Coco’s adoptive mom, isn’t entirely sure of the pup’s early history. She suspects Coco might have been part of an accidental litter or the result of a backyard breeder.

What is known is that Coco was among the many dogs brought up from the Tijuana, Mexico area. She crossed the border into Southern California, where local rescues work tirelessly to find these animals loving homes.

An Unexpected Addition

Megan and her family weren’t actively searching for a new pet. Life was already busy, and adding a dog to the mix wasn’t on their immediate agenda.

However, fate had a different plan. When Megan met Coco, the connection was instant and undeniable.

“It wasn’t something we were totally looking for, but when we met her, we just fell in love with her,” Megan recalled. The decision was made so quickly that when Megan called her husband to share the news, he was in disbelief, saying, “I cannot believe you adopted a dog.”

A Timid Personality

Settling into a new home can be overwhelming for any rescue dog, and Coco was no exception. She was naturally very shy and submissive.

Her timid nature sometimes led people to misinterpret her behavior. When faced with new situations or people, Coco would often give what Megan describes as a “funny pit bull stare.”

This look sometimes made strangers question if she was friendly, not realizing it was simply her way of coping with her own uncertainty.

An Unbreakable Bond

Despite her general shyness, Coco quickly found her anchor in the family: Megan’s youngest son, who is now five years old.

The connection between the dog and the little boy was immediate and profound. “They are just two peas in a pod,” Megan shared.

Coco became his constant companion, following him everywhere. More than just a playmate, she took on the role of his self-appointed guardian.

The Protective Shadow

Coco’s devotion to the youngest boy in the house is unwavering. She is always on high alert when it comes to his well-being.

If he ever cries or seems upset, Coco springs into action. She doesn’t just comfort him; she actively seeks help from the adults.

“If he cries, she’s right on me, like licking me, going, ‘Go help him, go help him,'” Megan explained. Coco will bump Megan’s shoulder, whimper, and lick her arm until she feels the situation is being addressed.

Finding Comfort in Family

Because Coco is naturally fearful of many things, loud noises like fireworks are especially terrifying for her. As the 4th of July approaches, her anxiety peaks.

During these stressful times, she knows exactly where she feels safest. She retreats to the five-year-old’s room, finding solace in his presence.

Beyond seeking comfort, Coco simply wants to be included in whatever the family is doing. If the kids are playing in the backyard, she makes sure she’s right in the middle of the action.

Joining in the Fun

Coco’s desire to be part of the family activities sometimes leads to hilarious moments. When the family first got a bounce house, she was understandably apprehensive.

But that fear quickly faded. Now, the moment the bounce house is pulled out, Coco is so eager to join the fun that she launches herself into it before it’s even fully inflated.

Another time, Megan was working quietly in her office and went to check on the kids. She found they had lined up the dining room chairs to make a train, and there was Coco, sitting patiently in the very first chair, fully participating in the game.

Navigating the Outside World

While Coco is comfortable at home, the outside world remains a challenge. She needs time to warm up to new people, and overwhelming situations cause her to shut down.

If a whole soccer team runs up to pet her, her discomfort is obvious. Dog parks are out of the question; she would simply quiver and retreat to a corner.

Even on walks, encountering multiple dogs can cause her to “pancake” flat on the ground, refusing to move until she feels safe again.

Moments of Pure Joy

Because Coco lacks confidence in many situations, the moments when she truly lets go are incredibly special to her family.

When she has the opportunity to run free off-leash in a safe environment, a different dog emerges. “It’s magical. She just wants to run,” Megan said.

Seeing her in her element, fully expressing herself without fear, is a beautiful sight for the family who loves her so much.

A Magical Addition

The dog they weren’t looking for turned out to be exactly what their family needed. Coco has brought a unique and beautiful energy into their home.

Megan is deeply grateful for the unexpected adoption. “I just love her to the moon and back. I just thank her for coming into our life and completing our family,” she shared.

The only worry Megan has now is wishing for as much time as possible with their special girl. For a shy dog from Tijuana, Coco has found the perfect place to belong, surrounded by a family who understands and adores her.
