A California special-needs puppy born with his legs completely backwards faces an uphill battle to walk, inspiring his foster family to try every possible solution.

When a tiny California puppy named Phelps first arrived at his rescue, his back legs were completely backwards.

Born with a severe case of swimmer’s syndrome, his limbs were flexed up in the air, leaving him unable to move like a normal dog.

The breeder who had him was unable to manage his complex medical needs, ultimately making the decision to surrender him.

Fortunately, Phelps landed in the arms of a California foster mom who specializes in special-needs neonates, and she was ready to give him the chance he deserved.

Usually, puppies born with swimmer’s syndrome come into the rescue’s care when they are just one to two weeks old.

At that early stage, their growing bodies are much easier to correct and mold into the proper position.

But Phelps’s case was entirely different, as his previous caretakers had waited a long time before reaching out for help.

“I’ve never seen a swimmer case so bad,” his foster mom admitted upon evaluating his condition.

The Daily Struggles

When Phelps first settled into his new foster home, he faced significant daily challenges.

Even simple tasks like eating a meal were incredibly difficult because he couldn’t lift himself over a standard food bowl.

His foster mom tried everything, carefully propping him up so he could reach his neck down to eat.

While it helped, there were times she would walk away for just a moment, only to return and find him flat on his back.

Starting the Hard Work

Knowing that Phelps needed immediate intervention, his foster family started with very small exercises to loosen up his tight muscles.

Over time, they moved him into a daily therapy routine, determined to prep his legs for a specialized hobble system.

Therapists worked with the spunky puppy every single day, refusing to let him miss a beat.

They put him on a treadmill and even utilized water therapy to help build his strength.

The dedication quickly began to pay off, and the progress they saw with his therapy was nothing short of amazing.

Within just the first couple of weeks, his care team was able to get his legs into a standing position.

Phelps was making incredible strides, and to everyone’s delight, he actually took a couple of steps.

His foster family truly believed they had found the cure that would finally allow Phelps to walk on his own.

An Unexpected Hurdle

But as the puppy continued to grow, his increasing weight began to work against his fragile joints.

The heavier he got, the less he wanted to put pressure on his legs and walk.

His foster mom soon realized that their journey was going to be a much longer process than they initially thought.

The days continued on, and Phelps’s once-rapid progress began to stall.

A Heartbreaking Diagnosis

Seeking answers, the rescue team touched base with specialists and arranged for MRIs to see what was happening inside his little body.

The imaging revealed a new challenge: Phelps also suffered from luxating elbows, meaning the bones were dislocating from the joints.

Eventually, they hit a devastating point where they were no longer seeing progress, but actual regression.

“It was honestly one of the most heartbreaking things,” his foster mom recalled.

Making the Most of Every Day

Despite the physical setbacks, Phelps’s spirit remained completely unbroken, and his funny personality kept his family laughing.

Because he wanted to be right beside his humans at all times, they relied on carrying systems to make his life easier.

He became absolutely obsessed with his foster dad, soaking up all the love and attention he could get.

Not wanting him to miss out on adventures with their other dogs, they even bought a bike trailer so he could join them on rides.

There was a brief moment when his foster family considered adopting him out exactly as he was, wondering if this was simply his fate.

But a nagging feeling in his foster mom’s heart told her that they hadn’t tried enough to help him.

She looked at the energetic puppy and knew he had far too much life in him to give up on his mobility.

“I just thought, ‘We’re not done trying,'” she said.

To give Phelps another chance at mobility, the team is now starting him in a specialized prosthetic cast.

The plan is to add hinges to the prosthetic so that he can still be comfortably put into a standing position.

His foster family is fully committed to the journey ahead, no matter how long it takes to see results.

Whether it takes eight weeks or three years, they are determined to get this brave boy walking again.
