When a local shelter in California rescued a tiny creature off the street, he was shaking uncontrollably.
The poor animal was so small and terrified that his rescuer didn’t even know if he was a dog at first. He was curled up so tightly that all anyone could see were his oversized ears.
He needed a quiet, safe place to decompress from life on the road. A kind foster mom stepped up to take him in, determined to show him that he was finally safe.
The Backward Sweatshirt Trick
On his first day in his new foster home, the tiny pup was completely overwhelmed by his surroundings.
Knowing how scared he was, his foster mom came up with a creative way to comfort him. She put her sweatshirt on backward so the hood was in the front.
She gently placed the little dog inside the hood, keeping him warm and pressed right against her chest. It was the first step in helping him feel secure.
Safe Inside A Beanie
As they settled into the house, it became clear that the dog felt most comfortable resting on the couch.
Still, he needed something cozy to burrow into to feel truly protected. His foster mom grabbed a standard winter beanie and placed him inside of it.
He was so small that he fit perfectly inside the hat. For a while, that little beanie became his safe haven.
A Glimmer Of Hope On Day Two
Because he was so shut down, his caretaker worried about his emotional recovery.
She didn’t know if he would ever actually open all the way up and show his true personality. But on his second day indoors, something shifted.

Today, DJ is a completely different dog. He has grown enough to actually fit into toy dog clothes, which was a very exciting milestone for his proud mom.
He is no longer the shaking mystery creature found on the road. “He’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Brooke shared. “He fills all my quiet spaces.”
