When Leonard first came home, he didn’t want anything to do with his new dad. The small dog had been rescued from a hoarding case, and the world was an overwhelming place.

His new owner had found him on the Petfinder app, hoping to give a deserving dog a second chance. But it was clear right away that Leonard was carrying a lot of trauma.

He was terrified of people, loud noises, and almost everything in his new environment. Building trust was going to take a lot of time and patience.

Having Blind Faith

Despite the dog’s fears, his new dad refused to give up. “I just had blind faith, as long as I do a good job taking care of him and bonding with him, he’ll eventually come around,” he shared.

He started small, offering treats for the tiniest accomplishments to help Leonard build confidence.

He would gently encourage him, saying, “We’re going to become best friends, right, Leonard?”

The Three-Month Rule

In the rescue world, there is a common saying that it takes a dog about three months to fully decompress and show their true personality.

But as the months ticked by, Leonard was still struggling. When five months passed, his dad started to worry.

Leonard would often just give him a “blind stare,” and his owner admitted he was scared the dog might never fully come around.

A Breakthrough Outdoors

The turning point finally came when they stepped outside. “The second that I took him outside, he started giving his happy face,” his dad recalled.

Away from the confines of a house, Leonard seemed to breathe a little easier. The fresh air and open space sparked something inside him.

Slowly but surely, Leonard’s true personality began to emerge, replacing his fear with curiosity.

The Backpack Adventures

To help Leonard experience the world safely, his dad started taking him on bike rides. Leonard would sit securely in a special backpack, watching the world go by.

“He gets the wind in his hair and the nose and all that,” his dad said with a smile.

Now, they go on a bike ride almost every single day. If his dad has to travel, Leonard comes right along with him.

The backpack rides didn’t just give Leonard a change of scenery; they became a crucial tool for socialization.

People on the street couldn’t resist the sight of the little dog chilling in the backpack. “It’s really funny how many times that we get stopped every day,” his dad noted.

Strangers would constantly ask to say hi or take a picture, showing Leonard that people could be kind and loving.

Always Ready To Go

Today, Leonard is a completely different dog. He no longer hides or stares blankly.

When his dad grabs the bag for their daily adventure, Leonard immediately starts wagging his tail. He knows it’s time for fun.

“As long as he’s near me, he seems to be up for any kind of adventure,” his dad proudly shared.

An Unbreakable Bond

The journey from a terrified hoarding survivor to a confident, adventurous companion took time, but it was worth every second.

Their bond is now incredibly strong. “Now our bond is like we are just so attached,” his dad said.

Seeing Leonard so full of life is a daily reminder of how far the little dog has come. “Everything I try to do is for him. I love that dog so much.”
