A Massive Rescue Operation

Kelly was dedicating her time as a volunteer at the Alaqua Animal Refuge in Florida.

The shelter was suddenly faced with an overwhelming situation when a massive hoarding case brought 97 dogs into their care all at once.

The situation was dire, and the previous owner was facing charges.

Amidst the chaos of nearly a hundred frightened animals, one tiny face stood out from the crowd.

An Unexpected Connection

Gizzie was part of that massive rescue intake.

When Kelly first laid eyes on her, she was absolutely stunned by the dog’s minuscule size.

“She’s about the smallest dog you’ve ever seen, just a precious little gem,” Kelly recalled.

Kelly had never considered herself a small-dog person, but seeing Gizzie completely changed her mind.

“I was like, ‘Holy cow, that is the cutest dog I’ve ever seen,'” Kelly shared, and she soon officially adopted the tiny survivor.

Hitting The Open Road

For the first two years, the pair settled into a comfortable life together.

Then, Kelly decided it was time for a massive lifestyle change, packing up to hit the road full-time in a travel trailer.

They spent their days exploring, mostly traveling around the western United States.

Gizzie absolutely thrived in this nomadic lifestyle.

According to Kelly, the tiny dog loved having a brand-new backyard to explore every couple of weeks.

A Strictly One-Person Dog

Today, Gizzie is 11 years old, but she still has bursts of puppy-like energy.

Despite her adorable appearance, she isn’t looking to make friends with strangers.

Gizzie is very much a one-person dog who has completely latched onto Kelly.

Because she is so incredibly small and cute, strangers constantly want to pet her.

Kelly frequently has to ask well-meaning people to give them space, simply turning away to protect Gizzie from getting nervous.

Bedtime Routines And A Deep Bond

The bond between the two is incredibly profound.

Kelly struggles to even put it into words, simply calling the dog “a little piece of me.”

Gizzie has her own special ways of communicating her needs, especially when it comes to bedtime.

When she decides it is time to sleep, she will start squeaking and fussing at Kelly to come to bed.

They sleep right next to each other every single night, and Kelly’s body instinctively knows she is there so she never rolls over on her.

High Fives And The Color Game

Gizzie is a highly expressive dog with a repertoire of adorable tricks.

Her signature move is giving high fives, which always brings a smile to Kelly’s face.

“It’s hilarious, her going for the finger for a high five,” Kelly explained.

They also play a special guessing activity that Kelly calls the “color game.”

Kelly will ask Gizzie, “What’s the color of the day?” and list off colors until Gizzie excitedly barks to pick the winner.

Facing Scary Health Battles

The journey hasn’t always been easy for the traveling duo.

Along the way, Gizzie has faced some significant health challenges.

She began experiencing frightening symptoms that looked like seizure activity.

Thankfully, veterinarians were able to get her on anti-seizure medication.

Kelly notes that, knock on wood, her tiny companion has been doing very well on the treatment.

Living In Gizzie’s World

Because of her health history, Gizzie remains a very sensitive little dog.

There were terrifying times when her condition would fluctuate minute by minute.

Kelly is so deeply connected to Gizzie that her own well-being is tied directly to the dog’s health.

“If she’s not feeling good, I do not feel good,” Kelly admitted.

Kelly happily accepts that they are simply living in “Gizzie’s world.”

The Biggest Impact

Even after all their years together, Kelly is still amazed by her best friend’s tiny stature.

Gizzie weighs a mere two and a half pounds, and her entire body is roughly the size of a standard soda can.

Yet, this tiny hoarding survivor has completely transformed Kelly’s universe.

“She’s had one of the biggest impacts of my life of any, any other person, place, or thing,” Kelly shared.

For a dog who started out as just one of 97 rescued animals, Gizzie finally found the one person who would make her the center of everything.
