Georgia Dog Spent His Fourth Birthday In A Shelter After His Family Left Him

After being abandoned by his family, a resilient three-legged Georgia dog named Benjamin has spent four birthdays waiting for a home. His devoted shelter volunteers refuse to give up on him.

A Bittersweet Celebration

Benjamin just turned nine years old on a recent Sunday.

To mark the occasion, he got to have a special birthday party outside of the shelter walls, an experience he absolutely loved.

But beneath the joy of the celebration, there was a heavy reality hanging over the day.

This marked the fourth birthday that Benjamin has had to spend living in an animal shelter without a family of his own.

Left Behind

Benjamin’s story took a heartbreaking turn back in 2021.

When his former family moved away, they made the devastating decision to abandon him.

He was left behind to fend for himself, eventually finding his way into the shelter system.

He has been waiting there patiently ever since, hoping someone will finally choose him.

Reconnecting With A Friend

A dedicated volunteer named Jessica first met Benjamin in 2022 when she began helping out at the shelter.

Eventually, Jessica ended up moving and lost track of the sweet dog for a little while.

Recently, she was able to reconnect with him and started visiting him again.

While she was thrilled to see his familiar face, she was astounded and deeply saddened that he hadn’t found a family during her time away.

The Perfect House Guest

Despite his long stay in the shelter environment, Benjamin’s spirit remains bright.

He has been on a few outings here and there, and he always does incredibly well.

Recently, he participated in a “weekend warrior” program, staying at a couple’s house for a short break.

His hosts reported that he did phenomenally well and was the perfect house guest.

Thriving On Three Legs

One thing that makes Benjamin unique is that he is a tripod.

However, missing a leg doesn’t slow this senior dog down in the slightest.

He can easily outrun his volunteers, climb up and down stairs, and hop in and out of cars with no problem.

Jessica believes people might underestimate him because of his missing leg, but it truly doesn’t hinder him at all.

His Dedicated “Aunties”

Because Benjamin has been waiting so long, he has built a special support system.

Jessica and another long-term volunteer have taken him under their wing, affectionately calling themselves his “aunties.”

They coordinate their schedules, switching off during the week to make sure they go see him.

Between the two of them, they try to get him out of the shelter for a walk or a quick car ride just about every other day.

A Promise Kept

Both of Benjamin’s devoted aunties have dogs of their own at home, preventing them from fostering him long-term.

In the meantime, they make it their mission to keep loving on him and ensuring he knows how much he matters.

Jessica frequently tells him that she loves him and reassures him that she is working hard to find his family.

She refuses to break her promise to find him the people he deserves.

Going The Extra Mile

Benjamin is currently waiting at Lifeline Community Animal Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

To help him find his forever home, the shelter offers a free foster program, and his adoption fee has already been sponsored.

Incredible supporters have even stepped up to offer transport throughout the East Coast.

One generous pilot has even offered to fly Benjamin anywhere in the country if it means finding the perfect fit.

Waiting For The Right Heart

It can be easy for adopters to scroll past a senior, three-legged dog online.

But those who know Benjamin say that once you meet him in person, he will steal your heart very quickly.

He is a sweet, resilient soul who has spent far too much time behind kennel bars.

His volunteers are simply waiting for the day someone finally gives this incredible dog the chance he has been waiting for.
