Mylo’s life began with an unexpected crisis when his original owner realized he couldn’t care for the newborn litter. The puppies’ mother was unable to produce milk, leaving the tiny dogs in desperate need of around-the-clock bottle feeding.
Knowing the urgency of the situation, a man named AJ decided to open his home and heart to one of the vulnerable babies. AJ adopted Mylo when the puppy was only about one week old, committing to the sleepless nights of feeding.
It was a delicate start, but the constant care forged an unbreakable foundation of trust between the tiny dog and his new dad.
A Surprising Draw To The Water
As Mylo grew into a healthy, energetic young dog, AJ began to notice something highly unusual about his furry best friend.
AJ, an avid surfer, would often return to the shore after spending time out in the ocean waves. Around the six or eight-month mark, whenever AJ came in from surfing, Mylo would eagerly run straight toward the water to greet him.
“I just was like, ‘Wow, this dog likes the water more than other dogs that I’ve seen that are small,'” AJ recalled.
It was a fascinating quirk for a little rescue dog, and it sparked a brilliant idea in his dad’s mind.
Testing The Waters
Seeing Mylo’s natural curiosity about the ocean, a light bulb went off for AJ. He wondered if his adventurous little rescue pup might actually enjoy surfing alongside him one day.
However, AJ knew that pushing a dog into the ocean too quickly could easily traumatize him. He wanted to make sure Mylo felt completely safe.
Instead of diving right in, they started gradually. AJ took Mylo to calm bay areas with no real waves to let the pup explore the water at his own pace.
This gentle approach was entirely focused on building the young dog’s confidence without overwhelming him.
Begging For More
It didn’t take long for Mylo’s confidence to soar in the calm, flat waters of the bay. He was clearly a natural water dog.
AJ began taking his pup for short, easy rides on a stand-up paddleboard to see how he would react to floating above the water.
To his dad’s amazement, Mylo absolutely loved the experience and was soon begging for more time on the board.

“It blows my mind,” AJ noted, amazed at how quickly his rescue dog adapted to the paddleboard.

Even though Mylo is a fearless and capable swimmer on his own, AJ never takes any chances with his best friend’s safety.
Mylo always wears a specialized life jacket equipped with two clips, two Velcro straps, and a sturdy handle on top.
AJ admits he feels the same level of nervousness he would if he had a human child riding on his surfboard.
Because of this, he reads the ocean carefully, taking things slow and making sure conditions are perfect before heading out.
If an unexpected wave approaches, AJ grabs Mylo’s handle to secure him, often taking the crashing water right to his own face to protect the pup.
Inspiring A House Full Of Rescues
Mylo’s incredible journey from a bottle-fed baby to a confident surfer wasn’t the only beautiful thing to come from his rescue.
AJ and his wife quickly noticed how wonderfully gentle and social Mylo was whenever he was around other dogs.
His loving temperament inspired AJ’s wife to take the next step in animal rescue by becoming a foster mom for Fosters of Hawaii.
The couple began opening their home to other dogs in need, giving them a safe place to land.
Along the way, they fell completely in love with two of their fosters, officially adopting them to become Mylo’s permanent sisters.
A Bond Like No Other
Today, the connection between AJ and the tiny puppy he saved years ago is deeper than words can describe.
“He reads me perfectly. I read him perfectly,” AJ explained about their unspoken communication out on the water.
The shared excitement and pure joy they experience while riding waves together has become the highlight of their lives.
AJ looks forward to the future, hoping to one day share that exact same magical bond with his daughter.
For now, he is simply grateful for the little bottle-fed rescue pup who bravely rode into his heart and changed his family forever.
