New York Producer Walks Away From An Anxious Dog To Test Their Bond, And The Pup’s Response Surprises Him
A producer at The Dodo in New York took on the challenge of pet-sitting an anxious dog named Rothko. After a hesitant start, the two formed a heartwarming bond.
A Tearful Goodbye

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet, even for a short trip, is never easy.
For one New York dog mom, leaving her anxious pup behind was a heavy moment. She knelt down to comfort him, promising she would be back before he knew it.
The dog, named Rothko, looked up at her with uncertainty. He was going to be in good hands, but the transition was still daunting.
Meeting The Sitter

The pet sitter, Parham, was a friend of Rothko’s mom and a producer at The Dodo.
He knew that Rothko was an anxious dog and wondered if the pup would even remember him.
Parham approached the situation with cautious optimism. Working at The Dodo, he had seen plenty of people win over nervous dogs, and he hoped he could do the same.
A Hesitant Start

When Parham first arrived, Rothko seemed confused and a bit shut down.
The dog wasn’t interested in playing or interacting. He kept his distance, unsure of this new temporary arrangement.
Parham knew he had to be patient and let Rothko set the pace.
The Harness Challenge

When it was time to go outside, Parham faced his first real hurdle: putting on Rothko’s harness.
He gently asked if he could put it on, but Rothko backed away, clearly saying no.
Parham decided to try a different approach. He grabbed a piece of a treat, hoping a little bribery would ease the tension.
A Small Victory

With the treat in hand, Parham tried again. This time, Rothko was a little more willing.
He leaned in, and Parham successfully slipped the harness on. It was a small but significant victory.
“That’s good. Now we can go on our walk,” Parham said, encouraged by the progress.
Testing The Waters

Over the next three days, Rothko slowly began to trust Parham more.
Parham even tested their bond by walking away to see if Rothko would run off or follow him.
To his delight, Rothko started following him around. The anxious dog was finally testing the waters and opening up.
Turning Into A Velcro Dog

As they spent more time together, Parham learned Rothko’s routine better.
He no longer needed to bribe the dog to go on walks. Rothko was happy to tag along.
In fact, Rothko turned into a “Velcro dog,” following Parham all around the apartment and even doing tricks for him.
A Happy Reunion

When the pet-sitting stint came to an end, Parham was sad to say goodbye, but he knew Rothko was excited to see his mom.
The reunion was filled with pure joy. Rothko greeted his mom with absolute excitement, his anxiety completely forgotten.
Later, when Parham saw Rothko again at The Dodo office, the dog remembered him perfectly. Parham knew that if he ever got the chance to watch Rothko again, he would do it in a heartbeat.
