Overweight Texas Dog Sat On The Red List After His Owner Was Gone And His Life Changed
Theo the dog lost his home and his health, but a dedicated Texas couple saw past his struggles and helped him embark on an incredible transformation.
A Heartbreaking Loss

When a beloved pet loses their owner, their entire world flips upside down in an instant.
For a small dog named Theo, the heartbreak of losing his human was just the beginning of his struggles.
He soon found himself in a Texas shelter, confused, grieving, and completely out of his element.
To make matters worse, the little dog was placed on the shelter’s red list, meaning his time was quickly running out.
Love At First Sight On Petfinder

Addison and Brendan were browsing Petfinder when a specific photo caught their eye.
The picture showed a dog with a chunky little neck squeezed into a harness that was far too tight.
Despite his rough appearance and clear need for help, the couple immediately fell in love with him.
They knew they had to step in and give this Texas dog the second chance he desperately needed.
Understanding His Past

When Addison and Brendan first met Theo, it was a somewhat sad experience.
The pup didn’t move much, and when he did, he had a noticeable wobble to his step.
While they didn’t know his entire backstory, they gathered that he had been very loved but severely overfed in his previous home.
It seemed he had consumed a lot of fast food instead of proper dog nutrition, leaving him sluggish and struggling with heavy breathing and snoring.
A Daunting Vet Visit

Taking Theo to the vet for the first time revealed the true extent of his health issues.
The poor dog had a laundry list of problems, ranging from his knees and teeth to his spleen.
The vet recommended various medicines, prescription diet foods, and supplements to help him heal.
While the couple experienced a bit of sticker shock at the costs, they looked at Theo and knew they would do absolutely anything to help him recover.
Adjusting To A New Life

Theo’s recovery required patience, so Addison and Brendan took things incredibly slow.
They introduced a strict routine of diet food, regular walks, and absolutely no more human food.
Theo wasn’t thrilled about the changes at first, but his new parents remained firm out of love.
Moving from Texas to Colorado also brought a learning curve, as the little dog initially despised the snow before eventually learning to love it.
The Grand Canyon Turning Point

As the weight slowly began to melt off, Theo’s true personality started to shine through.
A long road trip to the Grand Canyon and various national parks proved to be a massive turning point for the pup.
He began to come out of his shell, barking more and showing a sassy, animated side his family hadn’t seen before.
He was finally shedding his sad past and embracing the joy of simply being a dog.
An Unbreakable Bond

Throughout his transformation, Theo developed an incredibly intense bond with his new dad, Brendan.
Brendan quickly became Theo’s favorite person by far, and in the little dog’s eyes, he could do no wrong.
Brendan felt the exact same way, noting that he had never shared such a strong connection with any living thing.
The love and trust between them grew stronger with every pound Theo lost.
Running Toward The Future

When Theo was first rescued, he weighed 14.4 pounds, a heavy burden for such a small frame.
Just over a year later, he dropped to under nine pounds, losing more than a third of his body weight.
While he still has some extra skin, his vet hopes he will eventually settle between seven and eight pounds.
Now, whenever Theo breaks into a run down the street, Addison and Brendan get emotional, marveling at how far their once-unhappy dog has come.
