Georgia Shelter Dog Spends Half His Life Behind Bars, But One Thing Makes Him Smile Again

Buckeye is an eight-year-old Georgia dog who has spent four long years waiting for a home. While shelter life has taken its toll, a simple trampoline brings out his brightest smile and puppy-like joy.

A Puppy at Heart

When he’s on a trampoline, Buckeye truly looks like a puppy all over again.

He bounces off and hops right back on, making it clear that this is one of his absolute favorite things to do.

With a running start from the yard, he leaps as high and as far as he can, landing squarely on the bouncy surface.

It’s impossible not to break into a huge smile yourself when you see just how big his smile is in those moments.

The Reality of Shelter Life

But that joyful, carefree expression fades pretty quickly once playtime is over.

As soon as he has to walk back to his kennel at the shelter, the reality of his situation sets in.

Buckeye arrived at the shelter when he was just four years old.

Heartbreakingly, that is where he has remained ever since, watching the world go by from behind kennel doors.

Overlooked for Years

Now eight years old, Buckeye faces several hurdles when it comes to finding a family.

Many adopters tend to gravitate toward puppies, leaving older dogs waiting in the wings.

As a large, black, bully breed mix, he unfortunately falls into several categories of dogs that are frequently overlooked in shelters.

So, day after day, he waits, hoping that someone will finally see him for the wonderful companion he is.

A Transformation with Attention

Normally, Buckeye is a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky guy, but the long wait does get him down.

The shelter environment is tough on any dog, especially one who has been there for half his life.

However, the second anyone pays attention to him, everything changes.

He instantly turns into a completely different dog, his spirit lifting with just a little bit of affection.

Loved by the Staff

Despite his long wait, Buckeye is far from unloved.

He has dedicated volunteers and shelter staff who adore him and try to make his days as bright as possible.

They discovered a special spot near the shelter that can be rented out for the dogs to enjoy some freedom.

It was there that Buckeye discovered his unexpected passion.

Discovering the Trampoline

The first time Buckeye went up on the trampoline, he was very apprehensive.

He jumped onto it, completely unaware that the surface was going to bounce him back.

His reaction was hilarious, but it didn’t take long for him to realize how much fun it was.

He quickly decided, “Oh wow, this is awesome!”

Living in the Moment

Now, trampoline time is a cherished event.

He brings his toys with him, having the absolute time of his life and leaving his past behind.

In those moments, he is entirely carefree.

He pretty much doesn’t stop smiling until it’s time to leave and head back to his kennel.

Those who love him have been worrying about Buckeye a lot recently as another year passes.

Seeing him so full of life and happiness on the trampoline only reinforces how much he deserves to feel that way all the time.

He is available to foster or adopt anywhere throughout Metro Atlanta, and can even be adopted out of state.

While he needs to be the only pet in the house, he absolutely loves kids.

A Family of His Own

After four years of waiting, Buckeye has proven that his spirit is resilient.

He still has so much love, joy, and puppy-like energy to share with the right people.

His shelter family’s greatest hope is that he finally gets a home of his own.

They are waiting for the day he can leave the kennel behind for good, and keep that big, beautiful smile forever.
