Virginia Volunteer Is Finishing Grad School When An Overlooked Deaf Dog Upends All Her Plans

After spending over a year in a shelter without a single application, a deaf dog named Nutmeg was running out of time. That’s when a dedicated volunteer made a life-altering decision to give her the second chance she deserved.

An Unimaginable Wait

For 489 long days, a sweet dog named Nutmeg sat in a shelter, watching the world pass her by.

She was eventually brought to a rescue where a dedicated volunteer named Emily spent her time.

Despite her beautiful spirit, Nutmeg remained entirely overlooked by potential adopters.

In all that time, the special-needs pup had never received a single adoption application.

The Heavy Toll Of Kennel Life

Nutmeg’s prolonged stay in the rescue environment began to take a severe toll on her well-being.

Because she was deaf, the chaotic and loud environment of the kennels was incredibly overwhelming for her.

She started suffering from intense kennel stress and anxiety, struggling to cope with the daily routine.

Her deteriorating emotional state made it even harder for her to showcase her true, loving personality to anyone who walked by.

Quiet Moments Of Trust

Emily, who volunteered at the rescue, noticed how much Nutmeg was struggling.

Instead of forcing interaction, Emily would simply go and sit with the deaf dog in her kennel.

They would just sit there together in quiet companionship, allowing Nutmeg to approach whenever she felt comfortable.

Slowly but surely, the anxious dog started trusting Emily, realizing that this gentle human was going to consistently be there for her.

A Heartbreaking Discussion

Despite the beautiful bond forming between them, Nutmeg’s future at the rescue was growing incredibly bleak.

Because of her escalating kennel behaviors and the stress she was under, the rescue had to look at alternative options.

Tragically, one of the options being discussed was behavioral euthanasia.

Emily knew deep down that Nutmeg was a good dog who simply could not handle the shelter environment any longer.

At the time, Emily had absolutely no plans of adopting a dog.

She was in the middle of graduating from grad school and was just trying to help find Nutmeg a good home.

But knowing that Nutmeg’s life was on the line, Emily made a massive, life-altering decision.

She completely shifted her life plans, moved back in with her parents, and officially adopted the dog who had stolen her heart.

A Much-Needed Sigh Of Relief

The moment Nutmeg stepped into Emily’s home, the transformation was almost immediate.

Emily recalls that it felt like the dog let out a massive sigh of relief.

Away from the stressful kennels, Nutmeg was finally able to relax for the very first time in over a year.

She blossomed into a totally different dog from the anxious pup she had been at the shelter.

Life As A Little Firecracker

Today, Nutmeg is living her absolute best life and showing off her true, vibrant personality.

Emily describes her as a “little firecracker” with endless energy who simply loves life.

Because she is deaf, she just needs to be approached slowly and calmly so she isn’t startled.

Once she knows you’re there, she wiggles, smiles, and happily rolls over for belly rubs.

A Perfectly Imperfect Bond

The journey from a stressed shelter dog to a beloved family member has been incredibly rewarding for Emily.

She notes that there is something uniquely special about the bond you build with a deaf dog, as they rely on you so deeply for trust and guidance.

Emily doesn’t care that Nutmeg isn’t what some might call a “perfect” dog, because to her, she is absolutely perfect.

Nutmeg never has to change for anyone ever again, and she will be loved exactly as she is for the rest of her life.
