Heartbroken Deaf Georgia Dog Waited Behind Shelter Bars Until A Couple Noticed Something In His Eyes

After being returned to the shelter because he couldn’t hear, a sweet dog named Chompers finally met the couple who would change his life forever.

A Heartbreaking Start

Chompers likely had a very rough beginning in life. His new mom, Shirley, suspects he originally came from a puppy mill.

Breeders often abandon dogs with special needs because they can’t be sold for a profit. For a young, deaf puppy, the world can be an incredibly confusing place.

He eventually ended up at the Atlanta Humane Society in Georgia, waiting for someone to give him a real chance. Sadly, he was adopted and returned to the shelter at least once or twice.

People simply didn’t know how to handle a dog who couldn’t hear them.

An Instant Connection

Everything changed when Shirley and her boyfriend walked into the shelter. They weren’t deterred by Chompers’ lack of hearing.

In fact, the moment they locked eyes with the sweet dog, something magical happened. “As soon as we saw him, he was just so excited to see us,” Shirley recalled.

He acted as if he already knew them, greeting the couple with pure joy. They looked at his adorable face and knew right away that their search was over.

“We were like, this is our dog,” Shirley said.

Settling Into A New Life

The couple officially adopted Chompers and brought him back to their apartment. They were ready to give him the patience and love he had been denied in the past.

Adjusting to a new home can be overwhelming for any shelter dog, let alone one who lives in complete silence. However, Chompers settled right in.

Within the first twenty-four hours, Shirley felt a profound bond forming between them. She quickly realized that he wasn’t just a pet, but her “soul pup.”

Raising a deaf dog does come with its own unique set of challenges. Shirley admitted that it was a little scary at first.

The hardest part was knowing that Chompers had no recall. If he ever got loose and ran around, they couldn’t simply call his name to bring him back.

They had to learn new ways to communicate and keep him safe. Despite the initial learning curve, the couple quickly figured out a routine that worked perfectly for their family.

His Hidden Superpower

While some might see his deafness as a disability, Shirley views it as his greatest strength. “I say that that’s his superpower because we live in the city,” she explained.

The busy streets are incredibly loud, but Chompers is completely unbothered by the noise. He doesn’t bark at sirens, traffic, or loud neighbors.

Instead, he happily exists in his own peaceful little world. Even his giant, adorable ears are just an accessory, as Shirley jokes that they are “just for show.”

When other dogs bark at him, he just looks at them in confusion, completely unaware of the commotion.

Finding His Voice

When Chompers first arrived at his new home, he didn’t bark at all. He lived in total silence, never making a sound.

That changed when someone suggested they take him to a dog chiropractor. During the visit, the chiropractor gently adjusted the dog’s neck.

To everyone’s surprise, the adjustment helped Chompers find his bark. Now, he occasionally uses his voice, but only in very specific situations.

He doesn’t bark at other animals, choosing instead to use his newfound voice solely to communicate with his parents, especially when Shirley leaves for work.

The Blanket Thief

Chompers has also developed a few adorable quirks in his new home. His absolute favorite possession is a cozy blanket that he carries everywhere.

The blanket actually used to belong to Shirley, but Chompers quickly claimed it as his own. He loves to snuggle up in the fabric and happily “make biscuits” with his paws.

Whenever the family hangs out on their apartment balcony, Chompers insists on bringing his prized possession along. He will grab the blanket in his mouth and drag it outside before settling down.

The Ultimate Stress Reliever

As a PhD student, Shirley deals with a significant amount of daily stress. But all of her worries melt away the second she walks through the front door.

Chompers goes with her boyfriend to drop her off and pick her up from school, always acting incredibly surprised and thrilled to see her. He even barges into the bathroom just to make sure she isn’t leaving again.

“No one’s ever looked at me with those little cutie eyes that say like, I’m so glad you’re home,” Shirley shared. He has brought an immeasurable amount of happiness into their home.

Though he was once discarded for being deaf, Chompers finally found the family who knows he is absolutely perfect.
