Smile’s life began in the most unforgiving of circumstances. She was found living outside among piles of trash in Tijuana, Mexico.

Trapped in a severe hoarding situation with more than two dozen other dogs, she had never known the comfort of a safe, quiet home.

But her life was about to change forever when a dedicated network of rescuers stepped in to give her the second chance she desperately needed, eventually bringing her to Minnesota.

A Desperate Situation

When rescuers first pulled the sweet dog from the hoarding property, her physical condition was heartbreaking.

She was missing half of her fur due to a severe case of mange, leaving her skin exposed and uncomfortable.

To make matters even more urgent, the rescue team discovered that she was pregnant and would need a safe place to bring her puppies into the world.

A Long Journey North

A kind individual began pulling dogs from the property, setting a massive, multi-state rescue effort into motion.

They partnered with the At-Choo Foundation in California, an organization that worked tirelessly to transport the dogs across the border into the United States.

From there, a rescue group called Mutt Mutt Engine arranged for the expectant mother to travel all the way to Minnesota.

A foster mom named Stephanie was eagerly waiting for her, as her kids had been asking to foster a pregnant mother dog for quite some time.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

When the dog finally arrived at Stephanie’s home in Minnesota, the foster mom was immediately taken aback by her appearance.

The dog was supposed to be giving birth in just two weeks, but she looked remarkably thin and fragile.

“I looked at her and there was no way she was pregnant,” Stephanie recalled.

Instead of carrying a healthy litter, she was incredibly skinny and severely malnourished from her time on the streets.

Surviving the Unthinkable

A closer medical evaluation revealed a tragic but fascinating biological truth about survival.

Stephanie learned that when a pregnant dog is starving and under extreme stress, her body can actually absorb the pregnancy to protect her own life.

Her malnourished body could no longer support the pregnancy because it lacked the resources the puppies needed.

The sweet dog’s body had prioritized her own survival during her time in the hoarding house.

The Fear Behind the Smile

Despite everything she had been through, the resilient dog offered her rescuers a gentle smile right away.

However, Stephanie could tell that the dog was incredibly nervous and still didn’t trust her new, quiet surroundings.

Her big brown eyes would tear up and water constantly whenever someone approached.

“Almost like she was so scared to blink that something would happen if I raised my hands or moved too quickly,” Stephanie noted.

A Plea for Safety

The dog was exceptionally sweet, but Stephanie soon realized that this affection was actually a trauma response.

Her sweetness was a desperate attempt to convince her new caretakers that she was a good girl.

She was trying to prove that she didn’t need to be hurt, and that she was worthy of being kept safe.

It was a heartbreaking reminder of the harsh life she had left behind in the trash piles of Tijuana.

Learning to Be a Dog

Over time, the dog’s anxious sweetness transformed into genuine, relaxed affection.

She became incredibly attached to her foster family, to the point where she would refuse to eat if it meant leaving their side.

Stephanie and her family made sure to praise her whenever she ate her meals or finally showed interest in dog toys.

Slowly but surely, her confidence grew, and she realized she no longer had to convince anyone that she deserved to be loved.

The woman who runs the At-Choo Foundation officially named her Smile, a fitting title for a dog who had never had a name before.

Smile has beautiful, large brown eyes that sparkle with newfound joy and security.

Whenever she flashes her signature grin, her eyes squint and get smaller and smaller.

With just basic care, patience, and love, the once-terrified dog has completely thrived.

The Hardest Goodbye

Stephanie admits that she loves Smile with every fiber of her being.

She feels deeply connected to the sweet dog, making the thought of her eventual adoption incredibly difficult.

“She’s going to be the hardest foster I’ve ever said goodbye to, but if I keep her, I can’t keep saving dogs,” Stephanie explained.

By letting Smile go to the perfect forever family, Stephanie ensures that her home stays open for the next dog who desperately needs a reason to smile.
