Caged Michigan Dog Who Never Saw Sunlight Found A New Purpose Beside A Disabled Veteran
After surviving unimaginable neglect, a sweet Staffordshire Bull Terrier was rescued by a disabled Michigan veteran. Now, they are navigating life together in the most beautiful way.
A Rescue Mission In Detroit

Cricket’s early life was marked by unimaginable cruelty and neglect. At just six months old, the helpless pup was thrown out of a moving vehicle.
But her nightmare was only just beginning. A squatter picked her up and locked her inside a tiny cage, where she would remain for the next year and a half.
For all that time, the sweet dog never even saw the sunlight.
Josh, a man who used to rescue and rehabilitate fighting dogs in Detroit, heard about Cricket’s dire situation. He knew he had to intervene before it was too late.
He tracked down the squatter and laid out a firm ultimatum. “You could either just give me the dog scot-free, or we can contact the authorities,” Josh told him.
He made it clear that the man would lose both the dog and his home if the police got involved. Thankfully, the squatter willingly surrendered the dog, resulting in the best possible scenario.
First Tastes Of Freedom

The moment Josh got Cricket into his care, he wanted to show her the brighter side of life. Their very first stop was to get some ice cream to celebrate her newfound freedom.
Afterward, he took her to a wide-open field and simply let her experience what it was like to be a normal dog. But the physical scars of her past lingered.
Because she had been boarded up and forced to do all her business inside that tiny cage, her coat was in terrible shape.
It took about ten baths just to wash the horrible smell of her past away.
A Shared Need For Healing

While Cricket needed a safe haven, Josh was searching for a lifeline of his own. He is a military veteran who served for four years and now lives with PTSD.
As a permanently disabled veteran, Josh realized he needed a service dog to help him navigate his daily life.
He decided to train his new rescue to fill that crucial role. It was a perfect plan to give them both a renewed sense of purpose.
“I figured two birds, one stone, train her to be a service dog, and she’s just living the best life now,” Josh explained.
A Failed Guard Dog Finds Her True Calling

The man who had locked Cricket away originally wanted her to be a tough protection dog. However, she was a complete failure at the job for the most heartwarming reason.
“She’s a horrible protection dog,” Josh laughed. “She’s just too happy.”
Despite everything she had endured in her first two years of life, the sweet pup held onto her joyful spirit.
She greets everyone she meets with a bright smile and an adorable little wiggle.
Physical Support And Unwavering Loyalty

Cricket took to her service dog training beautifully, learning vital tasks to assist Josh. Because he cannot bend down, going to the grocery store used to be a daunting challenge.
Now, if Josh drops anything, Cricket happily grabs it and places it right into his shopping cart.
She also serves as a sturdy anchor to help him pull himself out of bed each morning.
When they walk, she moves carefully between his legs to brace them, preventing them from giving out inward.
Watching His Back In Crowds

Beyond physical assistance, Cricket provides essential emotional support for Josh’s PTSD. He generally avoids large, crowded areas, but sometimes they are unavoidable.
When they do have to venture into groups, Cricket’s calming presence helps him cope with the overwhelming environment.
She is trained to watch in different directions, giving Josh the peace of mind he needs to feel secure.
Knowing she has his back makes the outside world feel much less intimidating.
Changing Minds One Wave At A Time

As a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Cricket attracts a lot of attention when they are out in public. Most reactions are overwhelmingly positive because of her undeniable cuteness.
However, some people who don’t understand her breed quickly label her as a pit bull and become frightened.
To help break the stigma, Josh taught Cricket a special trick to show off her friendly nature.
Now, whenever a child waves at her, the sweet dog enthusiastically waves right back.
The Ultimate Snuggle Bug

When she is off duty, Cricket is a deeply affectionate companion who loves nothing more than being close to her dad.
Josh affectionately calls her a “blanket dog” because of her quirky sleeping habits.
Even if it is a sweltering 100 degrees outside, Cricket insists on being tucked completely under a blanket.
She constantly needs to be touching Josh or snuggling up against him, a beautiful contrast to the cold, lonely cage where she spent her youth.
A Match Made In Heaven

Looking at Cricket today, no one would ever guess the horrific trauma she survived. Josh feels an immense sense of pride, comparing the experience to a parent watching their child grow up and thrive.
From the very first weeks they spent together, it felt as though she had been his dog forever.
“We were definitely a match made in heaven and clicked right away,” he said.
Though he has had plenty of dogs in the past, Josh knows there will never be another one quite like Cricket, a dog who understands his heart without needing a single word.
