California Stray Collapsed On 160-Degree Pavement While The Summer Heat Closed In Around Him
Found collapsing on scorching California pavement on a 110-degree day, a stray dog named Pierce needed immediate help. Thanks to dedicated rescuers, his story didn’t end on that hot road.
A Desperate Situation
When the summer sun beats down on California roads, the pavement can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes. For one stray dog, the scorching asphalt nearly became his final resting place.
A concerned girl spotted the dog struggling in the middle of the road and immediately made a call for help. Kirk and Noel Geiger of the Animal Rescue Center of California knew they had to act fast.
The rescue team arrived on a brutally hot day where temperatures had soared to 110 degrees. Out on the exposed street, the pavement itself was radiating heat at over 160 degrees.
The dog, later named Pierce, was severely overheating and appeared to have been through a recent trauma. Because he was so frightened and in pain, the rescuers didn’t know how he would react to being handled. Fortunately, an animal control officer was on the scene with a catch pole to safely help load Pierce into the vehicle.
Racing Against the Clock
Once Pierce was secured in the car, the team blasted the air conditioning to give him some immediate relief. The cool air helped a great deal, but he was still in the danger zone.
They drove him straight to the veterinary hospital for emergency care. Time was of the essence to bring his body temperature down.
Even after the car ride in the air conditioning, Pierce’s internal temperature was still a dangerously high 105 degrees when they arrived at the vet.
Heartbreaking Injuries
The extreme heat of the road had taken a severe toll on the poor dog’s paws. He didn’t have anything left to stand on.
The pads on his feet had suffered severe heat damage. It was a painful injury that required immediate medical attention.
The veterinary team worked quickly to treat his burns and stabilize his condition.
Waiting for a Family
As Pierce began his recovery, Kirk and Noel looked for clues about his past. He wasn’t microchipped, but interestingly, he was already neutered, suggesting he had belonged to someone at some point.
The rescue hung posters around the area and made social media posts hoping to track down his owner.
They waited patiently, hoping someone was missing their beloved pet. But after two weeks went by, sadly, no one ever came forward to claim him.
Discovering His True Personality
With no family looking for him, Pierce officially became part of the Animal Rescue Center family. Kirk and Noel poured all their love and attention into the sweet dog.
They knew that dogs who have roamed the streets and suffered trauma often haven’t received much affection in their lives.
In return, Pierce showed them the immense, immediate gratitude that only a rescue dog can offer. He was finally safe, and he seemed to know it.
A Shadow Named Pierce
Back at the rescue center, Pierce blossomed into what Kirk described as the most amazing dog they had ever rescued.
He formed an incredibly strong attachment to Kirk during his healing journey. Pierce wanted to be around him all the time, constantly seeking out his presence.
He always made sure he was touching his favorite rescuer, finding comfort and security in their bond.
A New Life in Indiana
When it came time to find Pierce a forever home, the rescue wanted nothing but the absolute best for him.
They eventually connected with an amazing couple living in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both of his new owners are ophthalmologists, and they were ready to give Pierce a beautiful life.
The rescue team felt certain this was the perfect place for him to spend his future.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Today, Pierce is being spoiled wonderfully and even gets to go to work with his new family.
While his happy ending is everything the rescue hoped for, saying goodbye wasn’t easy. Kirk admitted that if he could have kept Pierce, he would have done so in a heartbeat.
Though he misses his furry shadow, he knows the brave dog who survived the scorching pavement finally has the beautiful, loving life he deserves.
