For almost a decade, a vibrant dog named Rufus was the center of his family’s world.

Adopted in 2016, the sweet senior pup was known for his lively spirit. People who met him often remarked that he still acted like a puppy.

But in April, the family’s world turned upside down. Rufus passed away suddenly, leaving them completely heartbroken.

"We lost him, and we were not anticipating that," his owner, Jillian, shared.

The loss left a heavy silence in the home. On the Saturday night after Rufus passed, Jillian and her daughter looked for a way to cope with their grief.

They turned to a familiar comfort, scrolling through Instagram and Facebook to look at rescue dogs.

Jillian already followed several shelters and rescues, so her daughter began browsing the feeds to look at the animals.

Suddenly, the young girl stopped scrolling. She held up the phone to her mother and said, "Mom, look at this dog."

When Jillian looked at the screen, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The dog staring back at her looked exactly like Rufus.

For a split second, she honestly thought her daughter had opened the photo gallery on her phone.

Then, Jillian realized she was looking at an adoption profile for a rescue dog named Ziggy.

The resemblance was uncanny, and it immediately tugged at her grieving heart.

A Weekend Of Waiting

From 9:00 p.m. that Saturday night, Jillian couldn’t get Ziggy’s face out of her mind.

Despite the profound sadness her family was navigating, this mysterious dog offered a strange sense of comfort.

She waited anxiously for the weekend to pass. First thing Monday morning, she reached out to the rescue organization, Muttville.

She asked about their adoption process and quickly arranged a time for her family to meet the sweet senior pup.

An Instant Connection

When the family finally met Ziggy, he did something that felt incredibly familiar.

The very first people the dog approached were Jillian’s children. That was exactly how Rufus had lived his entire life.

Seeing Ziggy instantly gravitate toward her kids was all the confirmation Jillian needed.

Within ten minutes, she had made her decision. When asked if she had any questions about the dog, she simply said, "No."

Settling In Seamlessly

As an experienced foster family, Jillian was used to dogs needing time to adjust. Many even had to be carried through the front door.

Ziggy was completely different. He appeared to be one hundred percent comfortable with his new surroundings right away.

He instantly made himself at home on the family’s couch. Later, he casually strolled in and took a nap in her son’s bunk bed.

"There hasn’t been a moment that this dog has not felt like this was his family," Jillian noted.

Curiosity Leads To A Test

The family loved doing DNA breed tests to learn more about their rescue dogs.

It gave them a glimpse into their pets’ health, breed mix, and what their lives might have looked like before adoption.

Nine years earlier, in 2017, they had run a DNA test on Rufus through Embark. His profile was still saved in their system.

Curious about Ziggy’s background, they decided to order a test for him as well.

A Miraculous Reveal

When Ziggy’s results finally came back, Jillian was left completely stunned.

The screen displayed Rufus’s picture from nine years ago, indicating a parent match with 68% shared DNA.

The results confirmed the impossible: Ziggy was Rufus’s biological father. Jillian felt like she couldn’t breathe and let out a scream of disbelief.

"The likelihood of this happening is like one in hundreds of millions," Jillian said. For this grieving family, finding Ziggy felt like a beautiful final gift from the dog they loved so much.
