Three-Legged Montana Dog Watches Her Littermates Find Homes, Then Proves She Has No Idea She Is Different
After spending a long time at a Montana shelter and watching her siblings leave, a special three-legged dog named Honeydew finally found the loving home she always deserved.
Waiting for a Turn
For a sweet dog named Honeydew, the shelter environment was a place of waiting.
While she was surrounded by care, she had to watch as her littermates found their forever homes one by one.
They all got adopted before her, leaving her waiting in her kennel for someone to finally choose her.
But Honeydew’s long wait was about to end when a young woman named Bonnie walked into her life.
Extra Special
Bonnie immediately saw something wonderful in the dog that others had passed by.
Honeydew was missing a leg, but to Bonnie, that didn’t make her broken.
“I love that she has three legs,” Bonnie shared. “I think that makes her extra special.”
With a gentle spirit and a love for kisses, Honeydew was ready for her next chapter.
The Story Behind the Missing Leg
Honeydew wasn’t actually born with three legs.
She was born with a fully formed fourth leg, but it was completely non-functional.
Because she had no feeling or function in it, she was never able to use it to walk.
The extra limb would get stuck in fences and banged up on things, constantly getting in her way.
A Better Life
To give her the best chance at a comfortable life, the Humane Society made a crucial decision.
They determined that Honeydew would have a much better life without the non-functional leg holding her back.
The surgery was a success, leaving her as a happy, thriving tripod.
“I think she definitely does [have a better life],” Bonnie noted.
Heading Home
When Bonnie finally brought Honeydew home to her apartment, she wasn’t sure what to expect.
Many shelter dogs need time to decompress, but Honeydew surprised her.
“She wasn’t really, didn’t seem scared,” Bonnie recalled.
Instead, the sweet dog was mostly just curious and interested in what was happening next.
A Seamless Adjustment
The transition into apartment living was incredibly smooth.
“The transition was way better than I was even expecting,” Bonnie said.
Honeydew had no trouble adjusting to her new environment at all.
Though she is slightly hesitant around children, she quickly proved to be the friendliest dog Bonnie had ever met.
Living Life to the Fullest
Having three legs doesn’t slow Honeydew down one bit.
She runs, jumps on and off the couch, and even goes on hikes with Bonnie.
While she occasionally trips because of her missing leg, she just brushes it off.
Other than being a little clumsy sometimes, Honeydew has no idea she is any different from other dogs.
A Deeply Empathetic Heart
Beyond being a fun companion, Honeydew has become Bonnie’s best friend and emotional support.
One day, when Honeydew was being playful, Bonnie started crying about something.
Instantly, the dog’s demeanor changed; she calmed down, laid on Bonnie’s feet, and licked her tears.
Some people thought having a three-legged dog would be hard, but Bonnie knows better. Honeydew isn’t a sob story—she’s simply the most amazing, perfect dog.
