Utah Dad’s Energetic Dog Loves Roughhousing, But There’s One Family Member He Treats Differently

Jared always dreamed of having a big dog, but when he brought Rusty home, the energetic pup’s surprisingly gentle nature with his little girl proved he was exactly what the Utah family needed.

A Daily Routine of Love

Every single day, there is a familiar scene unfolding at the front door. A loyal dog waits patiently for his favorite person to return.

The moment Jared turns the knob, the anticipation bubbles over. The dog’s entire body goes into a full wag, unable to contain his joy.

“He’s my buddy,” Jared explains. The two share quiet conversations, just talking about how the day went.

They even hold hands, a sweet gesture that proves just how close they are. For Jared, this dog has become his ultimate sidekick.

The Dream of a Bigger Dog

For a long time, Jared had a specific wish for his family. He had told his wife that the very first chance he got, he wanted to bring home a larger dog.

When the day finally came to go look at a potential new family member, the connection was instant. Jared took one look at the handsome pup and knew their search was over.

“I told my wife, I said, ‘Well, that’s it,'” Jared recalls.

There was an undeniable feeling in the air. To the couple, finding this specific dog felt like it was simply meant to be.

A House Full of Chaos

Bringing the new dog, named Rusty, into their home was an adventure in itself. The initial transition was nothing short of chaotic.

Rusty brought an explosion of energy into the house. He would get the zoomies, sprinting through the rooms and running in endless circles.

“I knew from that time I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, you have the biggest personality,'” Jared remembers.

While the energy was hilarious, it also brought up some natural concerns for the parents as they watched him race through the halls.

Overcoming the Early Doubts

With such a large, rowdy dog running through the house, Jared and his wife couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit of worry in the back of their minds.

They wondered what would happen if Rusty didn’t get along with everyone. More importantly, they worried about how he would treat their young children.

It is a common fear for any family introducing a big, energetic dog to little ones. But Rusty was about to prove all of their doubts wrong.

If Rusty is out running and accidentally hurts his paw, his tough-guy act instantly melts away.

He will tuck his tail between his legs, lay his ears flat, and go straight to Jared’s wife for sympathy and care.

The Sweetest Tea Party Guest

The most surprising dynamic, however, is the one Rusty shares with Jared’s young daughter.

Despite his chaotic zoomies and large size, the dog transforms when he is around the little girl. He happily participates in her imaginative play.

The two of them even have little tea parties together. Rusty will just sit there patiently, playing the role of the perfect guest.

“It’s interesting because it’s like he knows that she’s little, so he has to behave a certain way with her,” Jared notes.

Rough and Tumble With Dad

While Rusty is a perfect, gentle gentleman with the kids, he lets his wild side out with Jared.

“With me he can be more himself, and be the rough and tumble kind of dog,” Jared explains.

Yet, even their roughhousing is filled with affection. Sometimes Rusty will just rest his heavy head in Jared’s hands, demanding to be held.

Other times, the two of them will just sit quietly by the window together, watching the world go by. It has become their special bonding routine.

A Family Made Whole

Whether he is following Jared around the house or acting silly, Rusty has seamlessly woven himself into the fabric of their lives.

Jared finally got his dream of having a big dog, but he ended up with so much more. Rusty is friendly, fiercely loyal, and the exact kind of crazy friend they needed.

“Our family feels whole, I think with him and all the little shenanigans that he does all the time,” Jared says.

When the whole family is home together, Rusty is at his happiest. His little world, and theirs, is finally complete.
