Haas, a professional cleaner, was hired for what seemed like a standard job.

The house she was brought in to clean was suffering from a severe mouse infestation.

While navigating the home, she noticed a pet bird named Peaches living amidst the chaos.

It was clear that the bird’s living situation was far from ideal, but the true extent of the problem was hiding just out of sight.

The Secret Beneath The Cage

When Haas went to move Peaches’ cage, she uncovered a startling scene.

Underneath the enclosure, she found a massive nest with probably two dozen mice.

The mice had gathered there for a very specific reason: Peaches had been sharing her food with them.

Despite the infestation, Haas handled the situation with compassion, keeping the baby mice with their mother and moving them to a safer place.

Seeing the conditions Peaches was living in, Haas knew she had to intervene.

She approached the owner and gently asked if he would be willing to rehome the bird.

To her relief, the owner was actually really excited about the idea of giving Peaches a better situation.

Haas realized that the owner never intended to cause the bird any harm; they simply needed help and were overwhelmed.

Facing A New Fear

Taking Peaches in was a beautiful gesture, but it came with a major personal hurdle for Haas.

She admitted that she was actually quite afraid of birds.

Peaches was her very first bird, making the entire experience a massive learning curve.

Haas was incredibly nervous about handling her new feathered friend, but she was determined to give Peaches a good life.

Going Back To School

Realizing she needed guidance, Haas sought out professional help to ensure Peaches thrived.

She ended up enrolling in a class on caring for birds.

The course was taught by a local bird rescue organization called Pearl.

Through the class, Haas began learning about Peaches just as much as Peaches was learning about her.

The Struggle To Play

Their new life together required a lot of patience, and Haas admits she bungled things up a couple of times.

One of the most heartbreaking realizations was that Peaches didn’t know how to be a normal bird.

When Haas first brought her home, Peaches had no idea how to play with toys.

She needed someone to show her how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Help arrived in the form of an unlikely teacher: Haas’s large rescue dog, Hoagie.

Hoagie has a special talent for teaching other dogs how to play, and he extended that same grace to Peaches.

Despite his large size, the sweet dog proved to be incredibly gentle and patient with the tiny bird.

Haas was amazed by how aware Hoagie was of Peaches’ size and the delicate dynamic between them.

Sneak Attacks And Sweet Moments

To keep everyone safe, Haas makes sure to keep them on different levels during playtime.

Hoagie has never put his mouth on Peaches, acting as a perfect, respectful companion.

With Hoagie’s encouragement, Peaches’ playful personality finally began to shine through.

She started doing little sneak attacks, hiding and popping out to surprise her canine friend.

A Life Full Of Sunlight

Today, Haas just wants good things for the bird who survived so much.

She vividly remembers the first time she was able to take Peaches out into the sunlight and fresh air.

Seeing the sweet bird finally experience true joy has been a remarkable reward.

It continually astonishes Haas that, despite facing considerable hardship, Peaches managed to stay so incredibly tender and sweet.
