He arrived at the Maryland shelter underweight and confused, earning the heartbreaking name “Sad.” But his 17th foster mom saw something special in his worried eyes.

When a dog loses the only home he has ever known, the confusion can take a heavy toll on his spirit. For one sweet pup, a trip to the shelter left him completely shut down.

He came in as an owner surrender, leaving the staff to guess at his difficult past. They suspected his previous family either couldn’t afford his care or simply never came looking for him after he wandered off.

The stress of his situation was evident in his physical condition. He was incredibly underweight, tipping the scales at just 58 pounds when he desperately needed nourishment and love.

His worried expression and heavy heart earned him a heartbreaking moniker from the shelter staff. They decided to name him “Sad.”

An Experienced Rescuer Steps In

Leah was no stranger to helping dogs in need. As a dedicated animal advocate, she had already opened her home to countless pups waiting for their second chance.

When she saw a picture of the dog named “Sad,” something immediately tugged at her heartstrings. He had a face that made it look like he was always deep in thought.

“I saw that picture and I said, ‘Yes, absolutely, I will foster him,'” Leah recalled. He officially became her 17th foster dog.

She brought him home, renaming him Sid, and promised to help him heal until a forever family came along. But fate had a different plan in mind.

The Foster Fail

For the first two months, Leah worked patiently to help Sid decompress. She watched as his personality slowly began to bloom in the safety of her home.

As the weeks turned into months, the thought of saying goodbye to the quirky dog became unbearable. The bond they shared had grown too strong to break.

“I had him for about two months and I just, I couldn’t give him up,” Leah admitted. She reached out to the rescue to make her decision official.

The rescue team was thrilled, telling her, “Okay, he’s yours.” Leah happily replied, “Great, he’s mine,” sealing Sid’s beautiful fate.

Learning How Houses Work

Adjusting to a comfortable indoor life came with a hilarious learning curve for Sid. Simple household concepts were completely foreign to the rescue pup.

When Leah first brought him home, he was incredibly unsure of how doorways functioned. “He couldn’t quite understand that doors open and things exit,” she explained with a laugh.

He was also highly suspicious of random objects around the house. If something was leaning against a wall, Sid would bolt past it as quickly as possible just to be safe.

Even the outdoors held mysteries. One evening, a single plant sticking out in the front yard caused major concern, prompting Sid to bark at it until he deemed the motionless leaves “safe.”

The Mystery of the Moon Dog

As Sid grew more comfortable, his entertaining quirks became a daily source of joy for Leah. One of his favorite pastimes was staring at his own reflection.

He absolutely loved mirrors, but the skylights in Leah’s living room provided the ultimate entertainment. When it was dark outside, the glass created a perfect reflection of the living room below.

Sid would stare up at the window, completely baffled by the “moon dog” looking back at him. “He doesn’t understand how he’s up there, but he’s also down here,” Leah joked.

Leah would gently tell him to say “goodnight to the moon doggie” as he continued his intense staring contests with the ceiling.

A Unique and Lovable Look

Along with his hilarious personality, Sid boasted a completely unique physical appearance. After gaining weight and reaching a healthy 75 pounds, his true shape was revealed.

He had a massive head and giant paws, but a completely normal-sized body. Leah often joked that his proportions were entirely off.

“It just looks like somebody photoshopped his head and his paws to just be like a little bit too big,” she said affectionately.

His comical build only added to his charm. Leah would often look at him and wonder aloud, “How did something like this get created?”

Making Friends and Chasing Bugs

Sid wasn’t just a joy to Leah; he quickly won over everyone who visited the house. He developed a special way of showing affection to the people he trusted.

When Leah’s brother or her boyfriend’s friends came over, Sid would simply sit and lean all of his weight back into them, soaking up the love.

Outside, he fancied himself a fierce hunter of backyard bugs. He loved trying to catch them as they buzzed through the air.

However, his bravery had strict limits. If a bee suddenly changed direction and flew toward him, Sid would immediately panic and retreat.

The Center of Attention

Despite his initial fears and his sad beginnings at the shelter, Sid blossomed into an incredibly social butterfly. He proved just how far he had come during a local outing.

Leah took him to a bustling street festival, and Sid became the undeniable star of the event. They couldn’t walk more than two feet without a stranger stopping to pet him.

Instead of being overwhelmed, Sid soaked up every single moment of the praise. “He was having the time of his life,” Leah noted, adding that he just wanted more attention.

The dog who once looked so worried in a shelter kennel was now thriving in the center of a lively crowd.

A Limited Edition Soul

Looking back at the frightened, underweight dog she brought home, Leah knows that taking a chance on her 17th foster was the best decision she ever made.

Every quirky habit, from barking at plants to staring at the moon dog, makes Leah appreciate him more. She calls him a true miracle.

“He’s like a once in a lifetime dog,” Leah shared with a warm smile. “Everything he does, it’s just amazing. He’s a limited edition.”

The pup who was once named “Sad” now spends every day surrounded by love, joy, and a family that cherishes him. As Leah perfectly sums it up, “He’s my little soul man.”
