New York Couple Fostered A Timid Puppy, But A Sudden Email Forced Them To Make A Life-Changing Choice

A Journey From Kentucky To New York

When the tiny puppy was first carried into his new foster home, he immediately retreated into an open crate. He tucked himself away, unsure of his surroundings and completely overwhelmed by the sudden change.

His foster family left the door wide open, softly encouraging him to step out into the living room. But the frightened dog stayed frozen in place.

“I don’t think he knows he’s allowed to come out,” his foster mom realized as she watched him. The sweet pup simply needed time to realize he was finally safe.

The puppy, named Moose, had a rough start to life after being found wandering on the streets. He was taken to a crowded animal shelter in Kentucky, waiting for someone to notice him.

Thankfully, his luck changed when he was pulled from the shelter by Muddy Paws, an animal rescue based in New York City.

The foster mom’s daughter happened to work for Muddy Paws, and she had been begging her parents to foster a dog for years. When she showed them a photo of Moose, they finally agreed to open their home.

The Need To Decompress

When the couple first picked up Moose, he seemed surprisingly comfortable with them during the car ride home. But once they arrived, his fears quickly surfaced.

For the first 10 to 15 minutes, Moose refused to leave the safety of his crate. Recognizing that rescue dogs need time to decompress, his foster parents decided not to force him.

“We didn’t try to coax him out and waited for him to want to come out and meet us better,” his foster mom explained. They focused on keeping the environment calm and comforting.

They wanted him to feel completely at ease in their home. They knew that patience was the only way to earn a timid dog’s trust.

Clinging To His New Protectors

During those first few days, Moose was terrified of crossing any thresholds. He hesitated going in and out of the house, and even struggled with stepping in and out of his crate.

Despite his fears, he desperately craved companionship. He wanted to be near his foster parents at all times and refused to be left alone.

His anxiety kept him awake, and he couldn’t sleep through the night during those early days. The couple patiently stayed by his side, proving that they weren’t going anywhere.

Tommy Steps Up As A Teacher

Knowing Moose needed a boost of confidence, the couple introduced him to their resident dog, Tommy. The older dog immediately took the nervous puppy under his wing.

Tommy became an essential guide for Moose, especially when it came to navigating the household obstacles. The biggest challenge for the little puppy was the staircase.

Moose would stand at the bottom of the steps, putting one paw up and then immediately taking it back down. He was completely baffled by the concept of stairs.

Conquering The Steps Together

Seeing his new friend struggle, Tommy decided to demonstrate. The older dog ran up the stairs, stood at the top, and looked down as if to say, “Come on, it’s like that.”

With a little encouragement, Moose bravely made his way up. The exact same hesitation happened when it was time to go down, but Tommy was there to help him through it.

“Anything that was a first, after he did it once, he was fine,” his foster mom noted. “He just thought, ‘I’ve never done this. I’m not really sure what this is.'”

A Growing Bond And A Big Question

As Moose gained confidence, his sleeping habits improved dramatically. Soon, he was going to bed at 10 p.m. and sleeping soundly until 6:15 the next morning.

The foster dad was forming a deep, undeniable bond with the sweet puppy. He even began hinting to his wife, “Maybe we shouldn’t let this dog go.”

However, the couple was 64 and 65 years old. While they had planned well for retirement and were financially secure, they questioned if adopting a young puppy was the right choice at this stage of their lives.

The Deadline Approaches

The couple found themselves waffling back and forth, agonizing over the decision. They knew they had to make a final choice by Tuesday afternoon.

Deep down, the foster mom felt a strong pull toward keeping Moose. Just in case they decided to officially adopt him, she secretly went ahead and filled out the application.

They spent the entire day weighing their options, completely torn between letting him find another family and making him a permanent part of theirs.

The Email That Changed Everything

Suddenly, the rescue sent an email inviting Moose to the city for an early adoption event. When the foster mom shared the news, her husband immediately freaked out.
