Shut-Down Texas Shelter Dog With A Big Heart Got One Chance Before Time Ran Out
After multiple shelter stays, a Texas dog named Dixie was shutting down. A couple decided to give her the win she desperately needed.
Running Out Of Time
When Sarah and her husband first met Dixie, the dog seemed completely shut down. She had initially arrived at the shelter in early August 2022.
Over time, she had been in and out of the facility repeatedly. The constant changes were taking a toll on her spirit.
She was reaching a critical point where she was going to be placed on the at-risk list. Time was not on her side.
It was clear to observers that she had a litter of puppies at some point. However, her past remained a mystery.
A Plea For A Win
Sarah suspected that Dixie might have had a person long ago, but there was no way to know how long she had been surviving on the streets.
In January of the following year, Sarah and her husband visited the shelter. They were introduced to the quiet dog.

As soon as they start petting her, she rolls onto her back, demanding a belly rub and instantly becoming their best friend.
Sarah notes that if Dixie were human, she would be super outgoing and extroverted. She is essentially a 65-pound lap dog.
Flapping Ears And Big Hearts
One of Dixie’s most endearing physical traits is her ears. When she goes for a walk, she happily trucks along while her ears flap in the breeze.
Her ears are incredibly expressive, showing exactly what she is thinking and feeling at any given moment.
While Sarah jokes that she is biased about being the favorite person in the house, she admits Dixie might actually prefer her husband.
Her incredibly sweet and loving nature constantly makes Sarah wonder about her unknown history.
Waiting For Forever
Sarah admits that if she could keep Dixie and continue to foster, she would do it in a heartbeat.
However, she knows that adopting Dixie would mean she could no longer take in new fosters. The need for fosters and adopters in Texas, and across the country, is simply too great.
By keeping her home open, Sarah can continue to help more dogs. Meanwhile, the family has fostered Dixie for over a year.
