North Carolina Dog Lost His Ear, But What He Did To His Favorite Toy Will Melt Your Heart
After a heartbreaking past left him with only one ear, this resilient North Carolina dog found a creative way to make sure his favorite stuffed animal looked just like him.
A Life On A Chain

For a dog named Bruno, life was nothing more than the length of a heavy chain. Day after day, he was forced to endure the elements with nowhere to run and no one to show him affection.
Tragically, being restrained prevented him from escaping a dangerous encounter with another dog. The encounter caused a lasting injury that changed Bruno’s appearance permanently.
Thankfully, concerned neighbors reported his heartbreaking living conditions. Animal control officers quickly stepped in, pulling Bruno from the only harsh life he had ever known and giving him a chance to finally heal.
A Safe Place To Land

Bruno was transported to the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, North Carolina. For the first time, he had a soft bed, regular meals, and a roof over his head.
Despite the trauma he had endured, the shelter staff quickly realized that Bruno’s spirit was entirely unbroken. He was just a sweet boy looking for a little bit of comfort.
To help him settle into his kennel, the staff gave him a plush stuffed animal dog to snuggle with. They hoped the toy would provide some much-needed companionship while he waited for a family.
The Matching Toy

When shelter workers returned to check on Bruno, they noticed something incredibly touching about his new plush toy. The stuffed animal was missing an ear on the exact same side as Bruno.
It seemed the clever dog had carefully removed the ear from his toy. The staff guessed he wanted his little stuffed companion to look just like him so he wouldn’t feel so different.
This sweet and poignant gesture melted the hearts of everyone at the rescue. They knew they had to share his story to help him find the perfect forever home.
Love At First Sight

A young man named Levi happened to come across Bruno’s adoption post online. The story of the one-eared dog and his matching toy immediately caught his attention.
“When I saw his post, I was like, okay, he seems like the perfect dog,” Levi recalled. He didn’t want to waste a single second, so he headed to the shelter the very next day.
Levi wasn’t sure how a dog with such a traumatic past would react to a stranger. But Bruno was ready to show off his true personality.
Showing Off

As soon as Levi approached, Bruno was overjoyed. His tail wagged furiously as he came right up to the kennel door to shower his visitor with licks and love.
Bruno even grabbed one of his toys and started tossing it around the room. He was happily showing off for Levi, desperate to make a good impression.
Levi sat and played with the enthusiastic pup for about half an hour. By the end of their play session, Levi’s mind was completely made up.
The Ride Home

Levi officially adopted Bruno and walked him out to the car to start their new life together. At first, the transition brought up some nerves for the sweet dog.
“As soon as I got him in the car, he was a little anxious at first, but then he relaxed,” Levi shared. The gentle motion of the drive seemed to soothe him.
When they finally arrived at Levi’s house, Bruno took himself on a self-guided tour. He sniffed every corner of the rooms, trying to figure out exactly where he was.
Overcoming The Stigma

Because of his breed, Bruno sometimes faces unfair judgment from strangers when they are out in public. Levi notices that people can be a bit standoffish at first glance.
However, the moment they spot Bruno’s missing ear, their demeanor usually softens. They often feel sympathetic and ask Levi if it is okay to pet him.
Levi always encourages them to say hello, knowing how much Bruno thrives on human interaction. Despite his past, Bruno is incredibly gentle and forgiving with everyone he meets.
A Joyful Bond

For Levi, adopting Bruno filled a special void in his life. With his childhood dog living back home with his parents, Levi had been missing the comforting presence of a canine companion.
“He has brought a certain joy into my life,” Levi said. He admits that he often catches himself talking to the resilient rescue dog like he is a little baby.
And as for that special stuffed animal that helped Bruno through his shelter days? The SPCA allowed Levi to take it home with them, and today, Bruno still happily plays with the toy that looks just like him, finally safe and loved forever.
