Devastated Georgia Dog Stops Eating After Losing The Only Home She Had Known For Five Years
When a terrified dog was surrendered after five years, she was so heartbroken she refused to eat. But a surprise text message about a hidden family member turned her tragic story into a beautiful reunion.
A Heartbreaking Surrender
For five long years, Dominoa knew only one home and one family in Georgia.
But in a heartbreaking turn of events, her owner surrendered her to the shelter, leaving the sweet dog completely devastated.
When a local Georgia foster mom saw her, Dominoa was visibly shaking and terrified of her new surroundings.
“I was like, ‘It’s OK. You don’t have to show me anymore. I’ll take her,'” her rescuer recalled, knowing she had to get the dog out of the stressful shelter environment.
Hiding Away From the World
The foster mom gently loaded Dominoa into her car and brought her to a quiet, safe home.
However, the trauma of losing everything she had ever known weighed heavily on the sweet dog.
“We got home. I was worried about her wanting to go and hide, and that’s exactly what she did,” her foster mom shared.
Dominoa retreated to a safe corner, completely overwhelmed by her sudden life change.
A Refusal to Eat
The physical toll of Dominoa’s stress was painfully obvious to her new caretaker.
She was already skin and bones, and her deep depression meant she wanted absolutely nothing to do with dog food.
Desperate to help her gain weight, her foster mom even cooked a fresh chicken breast and sat on the floor with a tray, eating alongside her.
Despite the gentle encouragement, Dominoa simply refused to eat. “I was like, ‘This poor baby,'” her foster mom remembered.
The Surprise Text Message
The next day, Dominoa’s foster mom was still worrying about how to help the grieving dog when her phone buzzed.
It was a text message from the rescue team, and the words on the screen left her stunned.
The text read: “You will not believe it, but she has a sister.”
Dominoa hadn’t just lost her owner; she had been separated from her sibling at the shelter, and she was clearly mourning the loss.
Planning a Reunion
Thankfully, the sister, a sweet dog named Rocks, was also safe.
Another wonderful volunteer had stepped up to foster Rocks, keeping her out of the shelter system.
As soon as the two foster moms connected, they knew they had to get the sisters back together.
They quickly made a plan to reunite the heartbroken siblings that very Saturday.
The Moment of Recognition
When Saturday arrived, the anticipation was high. “You ready to go see your sister today? You have no idea,” Dominoa’s foster mom told her.
As the two dogs were brought into the same space, there was a brief moment of hesitation.
“It took a few minutes, and then once Rocks kind of like realized who it was, they smelled each other, tails started wagging,” the foster mom explained.
In that instant, it was as if they forgot about everyone else in the room. They happily walked out the open door into the backyard, side by side.
Finding Peace at Last
Seeing the two sisters reunited was an incredibly emotional experience for the rescuers.
“That was the first, like, ounce of peace that they both had felt in who knows how long,” the foster mom noted.
The reunion was exactly what both dogs needed to heal from their trauma.
After getting confirmation that the other was safe, their entire demeanors shifted.
A Brighter Future Together
With her sister by her side, Dominoa finally felt safe enough to start eating again, and Rocks did the same.
Dominoa even began coming out of her kennel on her own, a massive step forward for the once-terrified dog.
Seeing their unbreakable bond, the rescue team made an important decision: the sisters would only be adopted out together.
“They’re just the sweetest, sweetest girls in the entire world,” their foster mom said. “Anybody who gets them is going to get dogs who are just going to be loyal to you and love you for the rest of their life.”
