When a tiny shelter dog named Squish first arrived at her new home, she was a shadow of the dog she was meant to be.
She had just narrowly escaped euthanasia at a shelter in Texas.
The rescue organization that pulled her to safety gave her a second chance, but the emotional scars were evident.
Her new mom, Cassie, immediately noticed how shut down the little pup was.
The Disappearing Tail
Squish came with no known backstory, but her body language told a heartbreaking tale of neglect.
It was clear to Cassie that no one had been properly caring for the little dog.
“When we did pick her up for the first time, her tail was so tucked under, we didn’t even see the tail,” Cassie recalled.

Learning To Feel Safe
Healing from her past didn’t happen overnight.
It took a few weeks for Squish to realize that she had finally found a permanent, safe space.

When she first arrived, Squish was completely silent.
She didn’t make a single noise, too frightened to draw any attention to herself.
Now, she has fully found her voice and isn’t afraid to use it.
She barks at the mailman and gladly barks at her big siblings if they aren’t doing exactly what she wants them to do.
A Surprising DNA Reveal
Curious about her unique appearance, the family decided to do a DNA test.
The results showed she is mostly Chihuahua mixed with a little bit of toy poodle.
But the test also revealed six or seven random breeds, including a whippet.
The biggest shock was finding fluffy breeds like Pomeranian in her mix, considering Squish isn’t fluffy in the slightest.
Ruling The Roost
The dog who once tried to make herself invisible now completely rules the house.
As Cassie perfectly describes it, “It’s Squish’s world, everyone’s just living in this cute rat’s world.”
For Cassie, the journey has been nothing short of magical.
Despite the rough start, she always felt a powerful soul connection with Squish, knowing from the very beginning that this special dog was meant to come home with her.
