California Corgi Gets A Floppy Toy Fish To Enjoy Indoors, But His Reaction To The Real Koi Says It All

When a stubborn California Corgi named Morty developed an intense fascination with his backyard koi pond, his family had to get creative to keep him safe and happy.

An Unusual Fascination

For most dogs in California, the backyard is a place to run, play fetch, or soak up the sun. But for a spirited Corgi named Morty, the yard holds a much more specific appeal.

Whenever his family opens the door to let him out, Morty doesn’t wander around sniffing the grass. Instead, he has a single destination in mind.

He makes a beeline straight for the family’s backyard koi pond.

Morty isn’t looking to cause any trouble for the colorful fish swimming beneath the surface. According to his family, he doesn’t want to hurt them at all—he just literally loves them.

Because Morty spent so much time hovering near the water’s edge, his family grew concerned about his safety.

They decided the best course of action was to teach the little dog how to swim, just in case he ever slipped in.

There was only one problem: despite his absolute obsession with the aquatic creatures, Morty has never actually liked the water.

During his swimming lessons, he would sit safely on the side of the pool, making it very clear that swimming was simply not for him.

Taking A Tumble

Morty’s dedication to his fishy friends meant he was always checking in on them and watching their every move.

His family often tried to distract him from the pond, but the determined Corgi was just too stubborn to step away.

Eventually, his intense focus led to a minor mishap.

During one particularly enthusiastic session by the water, Morty leaned just a little too far and took an accidental plunge into the pond, forcing his family to guide him to the ramp to get out.

Keeping The Peace

Aside from the falling hazard, Morty’s pond visits came with a very loud soundtrack.

When he gets overly excited hanging out by the koi pond, he tends to bark at the top of his lungs.

Not wanting to disrupt the neighbors with his joyful shouting, his owner had to find a way to coax him back inside.

Luckily, Morty is highly food-motivated, so a few tasty treats were usually enough to break his trance and bring him back to the house.

A Floppy Solution

Looking for a way to let Morty enjoy his favorite hobby indoors, his owner had a brilliant idea.

She spotted a floppy, moving toy fish at the store and immediately thought of her koi-obsessed pup.

She brought the mechanical toy home, hoping it would give him something to focus on away from the water’s edge.

When she turned it on and let it flop on the floor, Morty’s reaction was everything she had hoped for.

Pouncing Like A Cat

Morty absolutely loved his new indoor fish.

Instead of just staring at it like he did with the real koi, he engaged with the toy completely, trying to catch it with his paws like a cat.

The toy was such a hit that his owner even got a second one for their other dog, Maple, so they could both join in on the fun.

For a brief moment, it seemed like the indoor toys might finally give the backyard koi a little peace and quiet.

A Lifelong Passion

However, the floppy toy didn’t cure Morty’s obsession with the real pond—it only seemed to fuel it.

As soon as he was let back outside, he went right back to being completely captivated by the swimming koi.

His family has accepted that his daily pond patrols are simply a permanent part of their routine now.

As his owner perfectly summed up their life with the stubborn, fish-loving pup: ‘With corgis, you don’t really know who’s actually the owner. It’s their world and we just live in it.’
