Georgia Family Thought Their Dog Was Perfectly Healthy Until One Small Change In His Foot Gave Them Pause
When a rescued junkyard dog received a devastating neurological diagnosis, his Georgia family stepped up to make sure his golden years were filled with love, ramps, and endless support.
It started with a leap of faith over a junkyard fence in Atlanta, Georgia. A young dog and an older dog, believed to be his father, escaped the harsh reality of their surroundings.
A friend of a local resident ended up taking in the younger pup, but they knew they couldn’t keep him forever. They decided to send out a text message to see if anyone was looking for a furry companion.

A Spontaneous Addition
The text message went to Graham, a man known by his loved ones as a bit of a sucker when it comes to animals. His friend knew exactly who to reach out to when the young dog needed a home.
At the time, Graham had just started dating his partner, who was someone who usually took a long time to make big decisions. The sudden arrival of a three-month-old puppy was a major surprise.
Despite the initial shock of the spontaneous adoption, it didn’t take long for the new arrival to win everyone over. They named the handsome pup Dime, and the couple was absolutely obsessed with him.

He was obsessive with Graham right off the bat, constantly wanting to be by his side. His body language seemed to plead with his new family not to leave him behind.

The Brad Pitt Of Dogs
As Dime grew, he blossomed into a stunning, muscular dog who weighed 95 pounds at his peak. His family affectionately describes him as the Brad Pitt of dogs because of his handsome features.
Beyond his looks, Dime proved to be the ultimate good boy with impeccable manners. Even if his family left food out on the coffee table, he refused to break the rules.
He would wait patiently for his treats to be offered the correct way, never sneaking a bite from a plate. His gentle, respectful nature made him a joy to have in the house.
Welcoming A Wild Little Brother
In 2020, the family decided to expand their pack by rescuing another dog named Pork Roll. The new addition was the exact opposite of everything Dime stood for.
Pork Roll was highly rambunctious, loved to cause mischief, and had absolutely no boundaries. At first, Dime was completely baffled by the wild puppy they had brought home.
Despite their differences, the two dogs eventually became the best of friends. Today, they cuddle, snuggle, and share incredibly happy moments together.
A Devastating Diagnosis
For years, Dime lived a perfectly healthy, active life. But a year and a half ago, his family noticed he was favoring one of his feet more than usual.
A trip to the vet revealed a heartbreaking truth: Dime was positive for degenerative myelopathy. The awful neurological disorder starts by affecting the hind legs and progressively moves throughout the rest of the body.
There is no cure or treatment for the disease. However, the family found a small silver lining in the diagnosis—because the condition causes a lack of feeling in his hind end, Dime would never experience any pain from it.
Adjusting To A New Normal
The family immediately stepped up to help Dime navigate his changing body. In the beginning, they used a special harness to assist him when he needed to go outside.
That supportive setup worked well for about six months. Even as his back legs lost their function, Dime figured out how to use his strong front legs to scoot around the house.
His determination was inspiring. No matter how difficult it was to move, he continued to follow his parents from room to room, refusing to miss out on family time.
Ramps And Wheels
As the disease progressed, the family had to find new ways to keep Dime active. For longer walks, they introduced a doggy wheelchair, which gave him the freedom to explore again.
Living in the mountains presented a unique challenge, as their home was surrounded by stairs. To make sure Dime could still get around comfortably, Graham built a series of custom ramps.
They also set up a special treat area just for Dime, making sure his rambunctious brother Pork Roll wasn’t allowed near it. Every modification was made with Dime’s happiness in mind.
An Empathetic Soul
Despite his physical limitations, Dime’s emotional connection to his family has only grown stronger. He is incredibly in tune with human emotions, noticing even the slightest shift in mood.
If his mom starts to tear up, Dime is instantly aware of it. He zones in on her with an anxious, caring expression, seemingly desperate to figure out how to fix the problem.
His massive size has never stopped his parents from lifting him or getting him into his harnesses. Caring for him is a lot of work, but they consider every ounce of effort to be a privilege.
A Ten Out Of Ten
Now approaching his ninth birthday, Dime is still living a remarkably full and happy life. His family is overwhelmingly grateful for every single day they get to spend with him.
They have embraced the challenges of his diagnosis with open arms, stating they would gladly do this for another twenty years if they could. Their love for him is truly unconditional.
To his family, his name couldn’t be more fitting. He will always be their Dime, because in their eyes, he is a perfect ten out of ten.
