North Carolina Dog Had Two Adoptions Fall Through Before His Quirky New Routine Took Over The House
Dexter’s journey started with heartbreak in a North Carolina shelter. But after two failed adoptions, his rescuers made a life-changing decision that let his true, quirky personality shine.
Left Behind At The Shelter

Not every dog gets the loving start in life they deserve. For a sweet dog named Dexter, his early days were entirely defined by his utility.
Dexter found himself sitting in the Granville County, North Carolina shelter. He had been dumped there by a hunter who decided the dog was no longer useful for hunting.
Confused and alone, Dexter waited for someone to see his true value. Thankfully, animal rescuers Dave and Robin stepped in to change his fate.
They pulled the discarded hunting dog from the shelter and brought him into their rescue. It was the first step in a long journey toward a real home.
Healing A Broken Body

Before Dexter could find a family, Dave and Robin needed to make sure he was healthy. The neglected dog required significant medical attention.
They got him fully vetted and neutered to prepare him for adoption. They also discovered he was suffering from heartworm, a dangerous condition that required careful treatment.
Through it all, Dexter proved to be a resilient and gentle soul. He endured his medical treatments with grace, slowly regaining his strength.
Once he was finally healthy, his rescuers began the search for his forever family. They were certain this good boy would be snatched up quickly.
The First Heartbreak

It didn’t take long for a wonderful family to notice Dexter. They fell in love with his sweet demeanor and officially adopted him.
Dave and Robin were thrilled to see him head off to his new life. However, the celebration was unfortunately short-lived.
Dexter’s natural instincts kicked in, and he began chasing the family’s chickens. Realizing it wasn’t a safe fit for their farm animals, they made the tough choice to bring him back.
Dexter was returned to the rescue, waiting once again for a family that could handle his energy.
A Medical Setback

Determined to find him the perfect match, Dave and Robin kept trying. Soon, Dexter was adopted for a second time by a new family.
Everything seemed to be going well until a terrifying medical issue arose. Dexter suddenly started having seizures in his new home.
His new adopters were deeply worried about his safety. Because they worked during the day, they feared he would get seriously hurt while home alone.
With heavy hearts, they returned him to the rescue. Dexter had lost his home for a second time through no fault of his own.
The Golden Ticket

Seeing Dexter returned yet again broke Dave and Robin’s hearts. They knew how special he was and couldn’t bear to see him bounce around anymore.
Robin looked at the sweet dog and made a final, life-changing decision. She decided that his journey of moving from house to house was officially over.
“Third time’s a charm,” Robin told him. “You’re staying here. Here’s your golden ticket.”
Dexter was finally home for good. And once he realized he was safe, his true, hilarious personality began to shine through.
Determined Dexter Emerges

Now completely comfortable in his forever home, Dexter developed a rather unique daily habit. He became absolutely obsessed with the family’s cat beds.
Multiple times a day, Dexter makes it his personal mission to steal the beds. He carefully picks them up in his mouth and marches toward the door.
“We call him determined Dexter because once he decides he’s going to take something outside, he gets it and he doesn’t give up,” his family notes.
He has even been known to branch out from cat beds, once successfully sneaking a Halloween bucket out into the yard.
The Great Cat Bed Heist

The routine is the same every single time. Once Dexter gets a grip on his prize, he heads straight out the door.
He carefully navigates down the stairs, ensuring he doesn’t drop his precious cargo. Then, he trots about 20 or 30 steps into the yard.
Once he reaches his designated spot, he simply drops the bed on the grass. He then meanders away, completely satisfied with his hard work.
To cap off his successful heist, Dexter always celebrates with a few joyful barks.
A Harmless Quirky Life

After Dexter abandons his stolen goods in the yard, Dave or Robin simply walk out and retrieve them. It’s a harmless game that brings the whole family joy.
People often ask his owners if the constant thievery upsets them. “No, because he doesn’t hurt anything,” they explain.
Despite his determination to move the beds, Dexter is incredibly gentle. He is never destructive and has never torn up a single item in the house.
While some joke that he might accidentally take a real cat outside one day, he hasn’t yet. Dexter is just a happy, quirky dog who finally knows he is exactly where he belongs.
