California Dog Was Only Supposed To Stay A Few Days, But A $10,000 Journey Proved She Was Meant To Be There Forever
A temporary foster arrangement quickly turned into a lifetime commitment as one California family navigated three major surgeries for a dog they simply couldn’t live without.
A Temporary Favor
Tracy never planned on adding a high-needs dog to her family.
She simply wanted to help out a local organization in a pinch.
A friend had sent her a flyer about a rescue dog named Buffy who urgently needed a temporary place to go.
At the time, Buffy was being housed at a local vet’s office because the rescue organization was dealing with a sick puppy.
Tracy agreed to take the dog in, assuming it would be a very brief stay.
An Instant Connection
The plan was simple: keep Buffy for just a few days until the rescue could figure out a permanent solution.
But sometimes, a few days is all it takes for a life to change completely.
As soon as Buffy stepped into their home, the family was captivated by her gentle spirit.
“We were just gonna keep her for a few days, but she was ours instantly,” Tracy recalled.
The temporary foster arrangement had officially failed, and Buffy had found her forever home.
A Persistent Limp
While Buffy was settling into her new life, her family noticed something concerning about her gait.
She always limped and seemed to heavily favor one of her legs.
It was clear that she was in discomfort, and Tracy knew they had to get to the bottom of it.
They took her to the vet, hoping for a simple fix to ease her pain.
Instead, this discovery would mark the beginning of a long and expensive medical journey for the sweet rescue dog.
The $10,000 Dog
Buffy’s leg issues turned out to be severe, requiring major veterinary intervention.
She ended up needing surgery on one of her hind legs to correct the problem.
Later, she had to undergo a second surgery on her other hind leg to keep her mobile.
Unfortunately, that second surgery came apart, forcing the family to put her through a third operation to fix it.
“We’ve said she’s our $10,000 dog,” Tracy shared, noting that despite the massive cost, she is “worth every penny.”
Meeting Her Fur Sibling
Buffy wasn’t the only rescue dog in the house.
She shared her home with a senior fur sibling named Lulu.
Lulu had a difficult past of her own, having been kept in a crate all day before Tracy’s family rescued her from the neighborhood at 10 months old.
Because of her early isolation, Lulu was “kind of a mess” when she first arrived.
Now almost 13 years old, Lulu had found a comfortable life, and Buffy had to figure out how to fit into her world.
A Fiercely Protective Bond
The two dogs developed a unique and deeply bonded relationship.
Tracy admits that they occasionally get on each other’s nerves, just like any siblings would.
However, at the end of the day, they absolutely adore one another.
Buffy, in particular, took on the role of Lulu’s fierce protector.
She always kept a watchful eye on her older sister, making sure she was safe.
Kicked Out Of Daycare
Buffy’s protective nature eventually reached a comical extreme during a visit to doggy daycare.
Lulu was a very playful and active dog who loved to run around with the other pups in the yard.
But if Buffy thought the other dogs were playing too rough with Lulu, she would immediately step in.
She would give the other dogs a “little smack down” to protect her sister.
Her overprotective policing was too much for the facility, and at the end of the day, the staff told Tracy, “Please don’t bring them back.”
An Awkward Teenager
Despite her tough-guy act at daycare, Buffy is incredibly goofy at home.
Tracy affectionately describes her as being like an “awkward teenager.”
She is all legs and moves with a clumsy, endearing grace around the house.
Whether she is playing or just lounging, her long limbs always seem to be in the way.
Her quirky personality only made her family fall deeper in love with her.
A Loyal Shadow
Buffy’s devotion isn’t just limited to Lulu; she is incredibly attached to Tracy.
If the family is outside waiting with their leashes and Tracy runs back inside to grab her sunglasses, Buffy refuses to wait.
She will march right back into the house with her leash on to find her mom.
“She’s not going anywhere without me,” Tracy explained with a smile.
She has become a constant, loving shadow who needs to know her family is close.
The Best Spot In The House
Buffy’s love for Tracy is so strong that she demands to be as close to her as possible at all times.
If Lulu happens to be lying next to Tracy on the couch, Buffy will simply sit and stare her down.
She patiently waits until Lulu finally gives up and moves, just so she can claim the coveted spot.
Through all the surgeries and quirky behaviors, Buffy has been a rock for the family.
“She’s definitely gotten us through some rough times here at home, and we absolutely love her,” Tracy said.
