Microchip Gives New York Rescuers Hope For This Frail Dog Until Someone Answers The Phone

A dedicated rescue team steps out of their comfort zone to save a starving dog, only to face an uphill battle finding him the forever home he desperately needs.

A Desperate Message

When Meagan Licari checked her messages, she was met with an image that would break any animal lover’s heart. Someone had sent her an Instagram message featuring a completely emaciated dog who desperately needed help.

As part of a rescue organization that primarily focuses on cats, taking in a large dog wasn’t part of their usual routine. However, looking at the frail animal, Meagan knew she couldn’t simply look away.

“When I saw that, I knew I had to help him,” Meagan shared with GeoBeats. The team immediately sprang into action to get the suffering dog the proper veterinary care he so desperately required.

A Heartbreaking Dead End

During his initial veterinary assessment, the rescue team discovered a glimmer of hope: the dog was microchipped. They quickly dialed the number attached to the chip, hoping to reunite the lost dog with a worried family.

Instead, the phone call delivered a crushing blow. The person on the other end of the line casually explained that they had given the dog away three years ago.

When Meagan asked if they had any contact information for the people who took him, the answer was a simple “no.” The sweet dog, now named Bodhi, was truly on his own.

Making Do With What They Have

With Bodhi officially in their care, the rescue faced a massive logistical hurdle. Their animal holding space was strictly designed for cats, leaving them without a proper setup for a large dog.

Without an available foster home to take him in, the team had to get creative. They decided to set up a temporary space for Bodhi in the basement office of their food bank.

It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it was a safe, warm place where he could finally rest without fear of going hungry.

Lonely Nights On Camera

Because the basement office isn’t staffed around the clock, Bodhi’s nights require a specific routine. After his final evening walk, he has to be tucked into a crate for his own safety.

Meagan admits that leaving him alone is incredibly difficult. To make sure he’s okay, the team set up cameras and an automatic light so she can check in on him throughout the night.

“When he’s alone, it’s really been heartbreaking, but it’s our only option,” Meagan explained, noting that situations like Bodhi’s highlight the overwhelming animal crisis currently unfolding across the country.

A True Team Effort

Despite his less-than-ideal living situation, Bodhi is surrounded by people who adore him. Everyone on the rescue team pitches in to ensure he gets as much attention and exercise as possible.

He is guaranteed at least two walks a day, though the enthusiastic staff usually takes him out far more often than that. On days when Meagan is available, she makes sure to treat him to special trips to the local park.

Through consistent routines, training sessions, and endless affection, Bodhi slowly began to realize that he was finally safe.

An Incredible Transformation

Thanks to dedicated veterinary care and an abundance of TLC, Bodhi’s physical transformation has been nothing short of miraculous. When he first arrived at the rescue, he weighed a fragile 37 pounds.

Today, he is a healthy, robust 75-pound dog with a personality to match his size. He has blossomed into what Meagan lovingly describes as a “big goofball.”

Though he is incredibly smart, Bodhi also has a charmingly clumsy side. He is known for accidentally stepping on toes and loves nothing more than rolling around on his back to play.

An Unexpected Emotional Toll

Bodhi’s journey has left a profound mark on the people who stepped up to save him. Meagan, who was there the day he was rescued, has found herself deeply moved by everything the resilient dog has endured.

“I’m really, really strong emotionally. I don’t ever cry, like literally ever,” Meagan confessed. “And all I have done since helping this dog is cry.”

Watching him wait for a real home while living in a basement office has been a heavy burden for the dedicated rescuer, who just wants to see him finally catch a break.

Waiting For A Second Chance

Currently located in Middle Village, Queens, the rescue is searching for the perfect forever family for Bodhi. They are hoping to find an ideal home within a five-hour driving distance of New York City.

He has proven that he has an endless capacity for joy, despite the hardships of his past. Now, he just needs a family willing to give him the comfortable life he has been waiting for.

For Meagan and her team, the goal is simple but urgent. “I’m just desperate for him to find someone who can love him like I do,” she said, holding onto hope that Bodhi’s perfect match is out there.
