Ohio Family Struggled To Keep Up With Their Rescue Dog Until They Tried Something Different

What started as a way to burn off an Ohio rescue dog’s endless energy turned into a life-changing passion for one family and their four energetic pups.

When an Ohio husband and wife decided to visit a local rescue center, they were looking for a companion to share their lives.

That is when they met Harry, a dog who immediately proved to be the right fit for their family.

However, they quickly realized that their new best friend came with an abundance of enthusiasm.

Harry was always incredibly energetic, constantly looking for an outlet for his boundless spirit.

A Need To Burn Energy

The new pet parent knew she needed to get out and exercise a little bit more herself.

At the same time, Harry desperately needed a way to get some of his intense energy burned off.

That mutual need influenced them to discover canicross, a sport where dogs are attached to the front of the runner and expected to pull.

“It is like run with your dog,” she explained, noting that the unique sport was exactly what they both needed.

Once they found their rhythm with Harry, the family’s heart—and home—began to expand.

After adopting Harry, they decided to open their doors to foster another dog named Holly.

Soon after, a dog named Haze came home, officially becoming their third canine family member.

Finally, Hiccup joined the pack in what they lovingly called “a bit of an accident,” but the four dogs quickly got used to each other and settled in perfectly.

Overcoming The Stereotypes

Having a pack of bully breeds comes with its own set of unique challenges in public.

The dogs’ owner acknowledges that there is still a bit of a negative stereotype surrounding the breed.

“They can be a little bit intimidating,” she admitted, given their strong and athletic builds.

Despite this, she has found that most people who see them out on their runs are actually very supportive and encouraging.

The Thrill Of The Run

Today, the dogs are absolutely obsessed with their active lifestyle.

When the family pulls up to the park, the dogs are usually screaming and barking with excitement, eager to get out of the van.

They also love going to fly ball training, running in circles, and playfully wrestling with one another.

“I never enjoyed running, but it was so much fun seeing they enjoy it,” their mom shared.

A Life Changed For The Better

The sport isn’t always easy, and the runner admits she has had many slips and falls in the muddy weather.

By the end of their runs, she is very tired, but the joy on her dogs’ faces makes every muddy tumble worth it.

Canicross has built an unbreakable bond between the runner and her pack, turning them into a true team.

“I don’t think we would change it, not at all,” she said, adding that these incredible rescue dogs have changed their lives for the better.
